For instance, right now I'm having issues opening zip files. I don't want to bother opening a terminal to unzip them. Is there a way to install (for example) xarchiver on the internal NAND?

You can install on the NAND using opkg, but if there's a pnd file available (as I'm pretty sure there is for xarchiver) you're better of with that as NAND storage is limited. Incidentally there's already an archiver app supplied with the OS called Squeeze, so I imagine it's just a case of file-associating that with .zip files (right-click the file, select Open With ..., and make sure the check box for using the application as a default is clicked)

Can squeeze handle 7z files somehow?
No, unfortunately. According to their roadmap, it should be fixed by v0.3, but the last updated version was in '08 (0.2.3). Sorry I can't be more use - my pandora is currently in transit.
