I have a GP2X and am having problems installing the programs/games
I can write to my SD card but can only get certain games to run
other games give a black screen or return to main menu.
I am finding it very difficult reading and understanding the forum.
Is there anybody available who can discuss the basic principles with me.
I would like to set up quake for my boy at Christmas.
Would anybody be king enougth to allow me to call them and help me, Uk only though <_<

Hi, being new to the world of GP2X, I to found it hard to get quake up and running. What I did not find clear was that the PAK files (which are not part of the download) need to be taken from a complete copy of quake. That is a CD-ROM or shareware copy. I got an old copy of quake from ebay. Opened the game and copied the PAK files. This worked, I am still not able to use the launcher, but this is not a problem.

As I can not get the CD_rom quake running it is in DOS (I think). You are welcome to the copy. Email me at mail@confluentliving.co.uk. Hope this helps.

Thanks for your help. I do have a share ware version of quake and i have put these files onto the sd card. Is it important to put them into special locations. I am not sure what is meant by a PAK files, these are not labelled on the files downloaded

I think we need much clearer, and well signposted guides for newbies to help them get off the ground with *all* the basics, including do's and dont's. We were all newbies at one time after all.

Chipster i'm not sure about installing Quake on the gp2x yet, as i havent had time to try it yet myself. But if you want some easy installs to show your son in time for xmas, i'd recommend installing some emulators until you figure out running Quake. DrMD is a very good and quite easy to install Sega Megadrive emulator that will run tons of Sega Megadrive Roms (Games). Roms for lots of older consoles are downloadable from various places around the net, although one of the rules of forums like this is that we're not allowed to post links to them. So search for a while and you'll find them. If you already know all about roms, disregard. :)

Bassdevo, you can run Quake no problem on your system, just install it somewhere on your harddrive and use Winquake to play it...

You can download Winquake from here...

ftp://ftp.sunet.se/pub/pc/games/idgames2/idstuff/quake/wq100.zip

Winquake is just a Windows program that takes over launching Quake so that it runs fine in windows. There are instructions in the download that'll help you get it up and running.

Chipster, from the shareware version or the full version, the .Pak files are probably the only files you'll need.

.Pak files are compressed files (like .Zip files) that store all the images, sounds, and 3d models used by quake. This is why you need them for your gp2x version, because the gp2x download doesnt include them, it'll just have files that'll look in the .pak files to get the information they need to run quake.

Thanks for this; I too think that a simple guide to running games on the GP2X would be helpful. I came to the GP as I wanted to play past games. I understood that the GP would be a good platform for run games. I did not realise that I need some knowledge of how to sort and organise files.

If the platform is to take the step into the PSP league, then we must make it easy for people to use the platform.

Having run quake I have much more fun and involvement than all the PSP games I have.

Let try and make game playing what it should be- rewarding – exciting – and enjoyable.

I agree bassdevo, although i dont think that most gp32 and gp2x users are too bothered whether the gp2x competes with the psp that much really, as the psp is aimed (by Sony anyway) at people wanting to play cutting edge handheld games. Gamepark Holdings have embraced the open source community with the gp2x allowing anyone to write all their own software and do whatever they like with the system. Its the Ideal handheld system for retro gamers, as the emulators, not to mention homebrew games the system will encourage will be great. :)

Vimacs you chase people away. You can't simply assume people are stupid when taking tentative first steps into new territory, whether its written in black and white or not.

To Vimacs

As the educational director of an independent school, I can assure you that I can both read and write. It is your narrow minded, caveman attitude that makes it difficult for new people to feel confident to enter a new field and explore the possibilities of an exciting system.

If all you can do is make simple needless comments, and be a guru, then god help the GP2X and its development. Might I suggest that you develop some good professional communication skills along with your guru knowledge?

just to let you know, anyone can become a guru. They way it works is that someone else makes a post recommending that they are given the position, other people respond, and if the others (probably hando or evildragon) think that it is legit they will. Vimacs has a harsh attitude towards people who are new to the scene, just ignore it, most of us are very nice to people who are new as long as they attempt to find their answers on their own before asking. If you make an honest attempt to figure it out and you still can't, then its fine to ask (well, as long as you're not asking for roms or something..... although if you need any help finding roms, just send me a PM and i could give you a push in the right direction).

About quake:
you need the files to be setup in a certain arrangement. This arrangement should be explained in the readme included with the download. If it's not, search the boards, it's probably been asked before. For quake, i'm pretty sure that the current version only works with the full version of quake (not the shareware!).

If you need any more help, feel free to send me a pm and i'll help you as much as I can,
-ben

well, i had it running, but i have since deleted it in order to put other things on my card and I can't remember how I got it running. I think you just put the .gpe file and the .wad file in the same folder and run the .gpe file....

EDIT: you should get used to playing around a little bit with things on the gp2x as, if it is anything like the gp32, you will find yourself doing this quite a lot.
