Not here in Montreal its not. Its crazy to see all the people every year blazing like crazy downtown and not having the police to do nothing about it... They left us that day at least !

EDIT: Its mostly happening right there on the Mount royal in the middle of the city CODE

Yeah, similar thing here in Edmonton; hundreds of people (including myself) sat on the lawn outside the government buildings.

Not really recognized at all in England. Only found out what the significance of it was a year ago. Needless to say, I didn't celebrate.

I wish I had some way to join in the celebration. Well there's an antinuclear demonstration tomorrow, maybe I'll meet some friends. :) Otherwise it'll have to wait until it's past mayday (which should be nice and baked and drunk).

BTW, family guy had a celebratory episode of sorts.

Antinuclear? Why? what do you want to use instead, covering every square inch of the earth in wind turbines

Antinuclear?

Well, first of all, economic growth is what's killing the planet, we could make things that last for generations, but instead we make things that last for a few stock market quarters.

And yes, properly decentralized (the only way to go if we want a 'equal'/'non-hierarchical' relations with nature around us) system could sustain itself easy with local energy, wind, solar, whatever. As long as it's tailored carefully to the surrounding social and natural ecosystem.

Nuclear power is the 'silver bullet' ideology at work, "we CAN have eternal economic growth if we only dig up the nastiest shit known that'll pollute every ecosystem they come in to contact with". It doesn't work that way, what ever you build has an relation with the surrounding system, so radioactive spillage is just a matter of time, like oil spillages are. We CAN'T have unending economic growth, simply because we only have one planet.

And there's the decentralized/centralized debate. If you give all the economic and political power to a handful of men, they tend to 'think big', meaning their solutions are meant to cover the area they have power over (nations). We COULD have decentralized production of both energy and material pleasures, in the neighbourhoods of the cities and surrounding countryside. It's just a question of political will and movement to drive it.

Thanks all for the answers relating to what 420 means. And well said klikklak!

not really. it just shows most of the fundamental misconceptions about nuclear power

I must agree. After doing a bunch of research on it for class nuclear just seems to be the only viable answer. I don't understand what the issue is with building a bunch of 'em in semi-remote locations. Comparatively they produce much less pollution (the only bi-products being the spent fuel rods & low-level waste, both of which we have control over). I see it as a much more viable solution to the actual power issue here in the US, but I'm sure it won't catch on because of the economy. Investing in new technology puts more people to work (researching, developing, manufacturing) so I'm sure they'll go that route. Oh well... hopefully the solar tower will work out.

I think you have a fundamental misunderstanding of what klikklak is getting at. It's about a lot more than that single issue. Check out the wikipedia page on eco-socialism. I wouldn't call myself an eco-socialist but I have some respect for their ideas.
