So i want to know if you can get a GP2X running halflife. I say this because I have a Pentium Pro 200mhz that runs halflife nicely on 300x400 resolution, with software rendering (I think) and 64mb ram.

Basically i am just asking because i would imagine such scenario would push the limits of the GP2X to extremes, I figure this mostly hinges on weather we could use the GPU of the GP2X to do anything - since its only supposed to be for 2D I dont really understand how it all works.

I somehow doubt anyone will ever actually run this, but theoretically how far off are we?

it *is* possible as it uses a more advanced form of the Q1 engine. Not sure if the source code is available though.

If Quake 2 can get to 20+fps @ 200mhz I'd say, yes it's acheivable

I thought they did release the source code. Or at least, I remember them saying something along the lines of them releasing it once HL2 was in full swing.

It's funny, I felt scoffish when I read the subject header, but you're right, it is plausible, if not possible. This disturbs me greatly.

Allan.

the source was leaked.
it's possible.
it's illegal.
it's a helluva lot of work.

nobody is going to do it.

EVER!

try live with it ;)

Yes of course. The PPro is superscalar, has a FPU and very good second level cache.

The gp2x has two Arm9 cores (not exactly symmetrical), isn't superscalar that I know and doesn't have FPU either.

The HL is using modified Quake1 engine so it's depending on the float numbers a lot. Looking at current Q1 port for gp2x I'd risk to say that yes - HL should be possible on the gp2x. But unless someone would make custom engine for this game eventual port will not be fast at all.

The 2D Processor of gp2x is just that - "2D" processor. It is very nice for things like bitmaps blitting, filling of rectangles and such but beyond these its uses will be very limited (perhaps for buffers erasing only?).

With custom made engine HL level graphics should be possible. But it'd need a lot of effort and given that gp2x's controls aren't too optimal for full 3d games hardly worth it.

That'd be pretty cool, and I think it's very possible, but not likely to happen anytime soon like everyone else would agree. Alot of stuff to code and port

if it would be opensource, if there would a linux sdl port. then it could be possible. but its nothing of that ;)

The only source code they have provided (other than the leaked HL2 beta) are the game mod APIs. I strongly doubt they will release any source code, ever.

valve is probably the most gready company that exists right now, even more than EA. i bought the collector's edition which sold for like $90 us dollars and the extra special thing was a stupid t-shirt. it didn't come with the back catalogue or day of defeat source or anything. if you purchased it for $60 online via steam download you got dod source as well as the full back-catalogue. i think they are out to make as much money as they can and nothing else. well at least they make good games unlike EA that buys exclusive sports liscenses and then puts out crappy games.

you bought the collectors edition from vivendi, not valve, and vivendi and valve left in a lawsuit some time ago.

Well, if the leaked part IS true and it WAS Halflife instead of HL2, then it could happen...

IF someone who was talented was WILLING to do it without releasing his name or recieving ANY credit for the GP2X port. Because I bet if someone did it and let it KNOWN that they had done it, then valve would be on them immediately. :/

So I doubt anyone will want to risk it.

i dont think this works.. someone got the leaked sourcecode compile on windows and it was like a prealpha of HL.. i dont think anyone worked on that code again.
If it was really useful for HL1 someone had allready put out a new release, or a linux build (since the linux community is waiting for a HL port too for a long time)
so unless valve releases the sourcecode, or someone with huge skills and muuuuch time works on the leaked code and mix it with Q1 and Q2 code and gets out a olayable opensource version i wouldnt wait.

yeah the origonal hl2 was actually published by Sierra, know the boxed valve stuff is done by EA. the two greatest evils in video games joined forces.

I don't think the linux community would want to touch stolen code.

exactly.

Half life! I would love for it to be on the gp2x.. i really would!

But seriously! Look at valve, guzzling company that it is. It WRECKED hl2 for me! i LOVE HL2, but the loading times coz of steam are TERRIBLE!

Anyway... HL on 2X would be amazing. It would be great to show ur mates, and it would probably get thousands more people buying a 2x!
And thats why this is bad. Valve are guzzlers, and the 2x will be shattered! Gamepark holdings will be sued and then forced not to make the 2x opensource anymore!
Not only that, but us in the forums will be punished by talking about sourcecodes and all that. And then the industry will make us feel like criminals for not registering products we already PAID for!

So, even though hl on 2x makes me very happy, at the moment tho, id rather wait for a conversion to be made for the psp or nds and buy it for that, than having my 2x be slated and sued by valve. :( its upsetting, but thats what valve is like i guess!
