Half-life 2 Is Finally Released

AHHHH
will I stil be able to make a backup disk?
I have back-ups of all my games, Ill be pissed If I pay 50 bucks and cant back it up
grrrr
Well, will there be a demo anytime soon?

~Octavious

i was in gamestation today and theres a note on the desk

to play HL2

You MUST have an internet connection to activate your game
because of this
you CANNOT part exchange or return HL2 (unless faulty)

that is correct, you probably only need the CD key which you dont need to worry about if you bought the game.. i got my copy from gamestation too but havent tried it yet, my dads computer messed up from power surge and been trying to sort it out

thats unbelievable, so anyone without access to the internet cannot play HL2?!?!

bloody hell, the lengths some companys will go to to safegaurd their precious software. I bought dom3 a while back and haven't been able to play it because it scans your harddrive and if any dvd/cd emulation software is found it sits in the corner of your HD and sulks. DID I GIVE DOOM3 PERMISSION TO SCAN MY HARDDRIVE!??!?! nope, this bothers the privacy freak in me more than a little bit.

[edit] and to be perfectly honest there will be some way round it, there always is, so whats the bloody point. The pirates will pirate it eventually.

You get a Steam account meaning that you can just redownload the game, oh, and Valve's entire back-catalogue as well. Which is pretty nifty.

If there's one game to buy, it's HL2... CS:S and tons of rather good mods await, as well as the fantastic single player (or so I've heard)

I don't know about you, but I played the 'demo' back in September...

Unfortunately I'm going home until Monday so I'll have to pick the game up on Monday since I can't play it at home. Still, yay!!

It doesn't sound like that bad of an anti-piracy system to me. It's not prying into anyone's privacy like Doom 3. No one should be whining about needing internet access to play HL2. Seriously, if you can play HL2, you should have goddamn internet access. And if you can't back the game up.. oh well. Honestly, the majority of people who burn copies of their games are burning copies to give to friends, not as a personal back-up. With all the crap Valve has gone through with the development of this game, I think it makes complete sense for them to put as much security into the game as possible.

No one should be whining about needing internet access to play HL2. Seriously, if you can play HL2, you should have goddamn internet access.

What kind of techno-elite bullshit is that? So, because I have a computer that can play HL2 I automatically have access to the internet? What if you live in a location where the internet is impossible to get (they do exist you know!), how on earth is that fair?

And as for this:

the majority of people who burn copies of their games are burning copies to give to friends, not as a personal back-up.

Also, total bollocks. I back-up or no-cd crack as many of my games as I can because

1)I've just spent £25-40 and I REALLY don't want the original disk to get scratched

and 2)becuase it saves even having to locate the disk in the first place.

Also, if Valve hadn't been so goddamn secretive about their games and eleased a playable demo then maybe people wouldn't have felt the need to download half finished source code to test the game out, forbidden fruit and that.

How did I know you'd take that so personally? I wasn't fucking talking about you specifically. I'm sure you have all sorts of fun with your back-ups and cracks. Most people IN GENERAL will back-up/burn games to give to a friend. Plenty of people do it for personal use, but definitely not the majority. I wasn't picking on you or anyone on this site.

And yeah, I suppose if you live in some horrible location where you just can't get internet access, you're fucked. I suppose you can't download the game off of Steam, in that case, but that should only apply to not being able to get a high speed connection in your area. Hopefully, you'd still have the option for dial-up, which should work just fine for simply registering a hard copy of the game. If you can't get dial-up, then it's time to move. I don't know anyone who doesn't have internet access. I know only two people that still use dial-up.

I was just saying that it doesn't seem to be such a terrible system.

I hope no one gets it off STEAM :p... Who wants a File???... I would rather pay the same price (Or Less) and get an Actual Box and the Official DVDRom Disc. £26 and Free Postage is a nice price :) I would order it, But cant be bothered with it right now mainly cos I have about 50 - 100 games and have not completed them all yet :p

so wait. what is it we get from Sierra when we register?
Lets say I buy a CD version of the game
and by god, Im copying it because I hate not having backups, its just to hard to come by extra money these days
but anways, i buy the game, go home, install it, why do I need to register?
what do I get from registering over phone that will decide if I play HL2 or not?

~Octavious

Is that it?
you have to register to get a CD Key?
I hope thats it, cause I could just write it down and be OK
unless you have to register online
like, lets say I have the game and I want to put it on my Bro's computer, I already have it on mine and I called in for a CD Key, now is there just a place to type it in in the install and skip the whole online thing?
And I use Virtual CD 5, would doom not work on my computer if it sees that?
that pisses me off, majorly, Its my right to back up these damn expensive games

~Octavious

mwhahha

ive been playing cracked CS:S on official servers for a few weeks now , it got so much better today with new people ,

cand HL2 has already been cracked ,
unfortunately due to my low upload ration with the site thats seeding it , (im new to the site) i have another 1 hour in the queue before the d/l starts , then its a 3.96gig file , and i have HL2

and cus i have CS:S cracked already , theres simply no need for me to buy the game anymore , but if its good , i definately will :D *was dissapointed by DOOM3*

How did I know you'd take that so personally?

I wasn't taking it personally, I have 750kbps broadband... I just think its a shame that people that want to buy the game legitimatly are hampered and already the game has been cracked, which proves my point: anti-piracy mesures are bullshit, all they do is createa hassle for legitimate gamers. Anyone who wants to circumvent them will be able to with a fair amount of ease.

[edit] I dunno, DOOM3 didn't exactly innovate, but it did look very pretty, and was actually genuinley scary. If you ask me it did what it set out to do.

as I understand it:

buy HL2
install HL2

until you register you can't actually play it.

I would imagine that you need a keycode to register and you then get an activation code (much like photoshop's activation procedure).

and @Octavious; no DOOM will not run on your PC (unless there is a patch for it now, anyone?)

Q: With this steam thing can you buy one copy of the game and install it on two computers? I'm not trying to rip Valve off, I just have the opportunity to play it at work and home and kinda wanted to avoid shelling out for two copies if possible.

SO... Is there something that lets say I go and get Half Life 2, the normal version, would I be able to install it on all computers of my network and not have to register it?
I have a friend who has the special edition with the tshirt and all, and he said he installed it, then had to go online and its taking forever to do something
what the hell is it they do?
I want to buy it, install and play, not take 500 steps for anti piracy when the game leaked over a year ago
seems kinda futile

~Octavious

The leaked version wasn't finished, what with it being over a year ago and all.

Took me a few minutes to register and it's the best FPS I've ever played by a mile, just get it!

No idea about installing on other PCs but they have to let you reinstall it on your own, how would they know if you installed it on a different PC? Can't use IPs, some people's aren't fixed...

As it appears to have been cracked already all this was a bit of a waste of time! :p
