I have a .gif file that shows some of the ideas I have wondering around in my head for a more graphical GUI. I'll try uploading it. (How do I get a .gif on here?) I am thinking of something like KDE stripped down bare, or just hacked up real good. Just eat the code untill you get something small enough to look pretty on the gp2x. How though would we tweek the GUI, does anyone know which sources control that part of the embedded linux system? Instead of just loading graphical skins automatically with a skin changer hack that GPH probably coded, we can use terminal to tweak config files for xorg or xfree86, does anyone know what GPH linux runs for a graphical server? Damn man, where can we get this info. If anyone can help me, point me in a direction, I'd appreciate it. I know what I want to do, I just need a kick starter. Any ideas?

I am working on a better interface for the gp2x

Maybe that's a better solution than using KDE,
which I hate ;)

xfree86 or any other window manager would be massive overkill for such a simple device. Like a troll trying to push in a thumbtack with an overly large hammer.

The current menu on the GP2X is just another application. I'm not sure if it uses SDL or writes to the frame buffer directly, but it is just an application that draws stuff to the screen in response to joystick and button input. And that's all it needs to be.

Here it is

Thanks, I do understand that the window managers would be over kill, hah. Sooo, lets just mess around with the one we have now. You said coded in SDL? Where is the source for the simple gui that GPH made, does anyone know where exactly?

It could even be something console based like Midnight Commander, easy on resources and the eye . . . :)

Long-winded transition animations annoy me. Quick menu changes are a good thing, and is one of the golden rules in the design of game interfaces.

I said I didn't know whther GPH used SDL or direct access to the frame buffer. It could be either. There is no source available for the standard GP2X menu. And before you say it, no they do not have to release the source because they (GPH) wrote the menu and it is not released under GPL.

I'd like to see a skinnable GUI so people could make themes to look like classic GUIs of the past like Amiga Workbench, Atari GEM etc. I had a go at Windups "Themes" for the GP32 but they weren't very convincing...
