Gph/digisys Gpl Compliance W/ 1.3.0 Firmware

Guys be patient. Remember the more you flash the more you risk bricking your unit. I would rather have 1 good FW released after a long wait than 5 shitty ones that are chock full of bugs every week. I haven't upgraded at all and I still have 1.01 on my system, of course that is because the screen looks better. The new FW has a brighter but far more washed out screen.

The GPL freaks have also most certainly delayed the release. Now they must release the source so it takes time to get that ready too.

Relax. Remember this impatients is why they rushed this thing out with so many bugs in the first place.

I can see how some would prefer a tested firmware upgrade... infact... most would... but I thought we were more concerned about the source... in terms of source... even the 1.2.0 source would be sufficient enough to make ppl happy.... but firmware... well yeh... of course tested firmware would be better.

Rush the source release... not the firmware ;)

Plus, there are a lot of hella smart people on this board. If there's a firmware solution to problems, I'm pretty sure the guys here would be able to fix it.

(Now, all we'd need is a guaranteed way to unbrick a unit. Anybody opened it up? At my old job I used our EEPROM flasher to fix my BIOS -- wonder if you can yank the flash out and flash it? Or just write a minimal bootloader that would boot and jump to the kernel on the card until it's all debugged?)

Just make a JTAG cable and write some code and you should be able to do that.

These guys do a lot of other MagicEye stuff, probably for KT telecom, or Samsung.

I imagine they would be removing as much propriety code as possible before any source release.

My guess is that we wont be able to compile until we fill in the missing .c and .h files.

But atleast we'll know what was changed to the GPL effected code.

Of course it takes time to release the source thouse 5 minutes must warrent you calling people freaks. Did your mum introduce Richard Stallman as Uncle Dick once ;)

How dare you refer to them as GPL freaks. They are heroes ( in their own imaginations). Look how they got the source code released immediately - NOT.
O.K, they may not have helped in this situation but just think of the overall picture. When GPH and the GP2X have been blasted into oblivion in the name of the GPL we can just go out and buy another open source device. Obviously the brou·ha·ha caused by this will have persuaded other manufacturers to jump on board. Everyone is clamouring to produce products for niche markets that end up sueing them out of existance.
Yes. Truly the Linux community owes the GPL freaks big time.
To have linux on the GP2X was a pretty big deal. I think any future manufacturer is going to think Windows CE after this.
However, referring to them as 'GPL freaks' is totally unnecessary. The now established 'GPL nuts' is perfectly adequate.
If only they had just checked with DJWillis and Craigix.

If they used Windows CE illegaly, and if Microsoft and their supporters didn't let them to do it, would you think other manufacturers will not use Windows CE ?
Your post is as much useless and full of nonsense as any GPL nuts' post. Don't think you are better because you don't understand or don't like the GPL.

If the last source release was anything to go by, I don't think that spend that long removing proprietary stuff. As in for example, they ripped out the DRM directory completely, obviously thinking it was something to do with Digital Rights Management, when it actually contains no more than the Direct Rendering Manager :)

Saying that though, I've seen other companies release kernels with the same mistake - must be something to do with the people releasing the source having no actual involvement with the source itself, so they guess at what to remove or something like that?

If a manufacturer wants to use Windows CE, they will have to consider licensing first before release. There is no difference between the GPL and WinCE in this sense, why on earth do you think there is? In fact, what do you think the consequence would have been if GPH had tried to do to Microsoft what it is currently doing to linux copyright holders? It's a serious question: what do you think would have happened?

I think all GP2X users would have turned legal expert and made their views known far and wide in defence of Microsoft.... Oh! Hang on! That's not what I think would have happened at all. We would all be cursing Microsoft for their heavy handedness in destroying GPH.
However, justice would have been done. It would have been dealt with correctly by the copyright holders and not by anyone else.

In the same way this should be dealt with by the copyright holders and not by anyone else. From the previously posted quote :

In approximately a decade of enforcing the GPL, I have never insisted on payment of damages to the Foundation for violation of the license, and I have rarely required public admission of wrongdoing. Our position has always been that compliance with the license, and security for future good behavior, are the most important goals. We have done everything to make it easy for violators to comply, and we have offered oblivion with respect to past faults.

I would have said that all the name calling and attempts to publicly humiliate GPH and their suppliers is not in the spirit of the GPL at all.

The good that the GP2X has done in highlighting the open source community has been very poorly repaid by denying them the benfit of the doubt that Eben Moglen would have given them.
The GPL is enforcable and should be enforced in a spirit of cooperation and education, not one of vilification and alienation.

Surely we want manufacturers to support open source, not scare them away ?

I didn't realise that DJWillis or Craig wrote linux :D

If think the difference between propriatry linux and propriaty windows ce are pretty similar, thats the point.

What I think is quite difficult to understand is that you care that the source isn't released. You are clearly more anti-GPL than anyone is clearly for it :).

I know what DaveC problem is, just wondered what your hate is about, Did linus set fire to your dustbins?

Everyone has a right to a view, you know. I don't condone people hurling abuse at GPH and craigix, but there's no reason why people should not debate the issue here and on Slashdot and indeed anywhere on the internet. And there's another issue which relates to GPLed software and not to MS or other proprietary software: Even before I got my GP2X, I personally benefitted greatly from GPLed software. I for one fear that people may be less willing to produce this stuff if they are going to get ripped off by companies using it without following the terms of the licence they selected. I don't need the source code myself (although I'm sure the availability of the source will improve the GP2X no end as people who are cleverer than I get to work on it). I want it released so that all those dedicated individuals who contributed to the linux kernel and to mplayer etc don't get ticked off and stop producing great stuff.

I honestly think that you have this backwards. The open source community doesn't gain anything from a company that uses GPLed software and disregards the licence. However, GPH has gained at least one customer (me) because they used Linux on their device. I would be happy to bet that I'm not alone in that category.

The GPL is enforcable and should be enforced in a spirit of cooperation and education, not one of vilification and alienation.

Surely we want manufacturers to support open source, not scare them away ?
But GPH are not supporting open source. Just putting Linux on the device doesn't help at all if they treat the licence under which the software is available with contempt.

Well, you can really only speak for yourself on that matter. You have no idea how everyone else would have reacted, so I will take the above to mean how you would have reacted. What you’re really saying in the above is that you don’t give a rat’s ass about copyright law. Correct?

Despite not being a copyright holder my rights have still been violated. I was falsely advertised too. It may not have meant much to you, but to me the marketing bullet points of Open Source, GPL, and GNU/Linux were major selling points. It was one of the primary reasons I bought the device in the first place. Before anybody even ask, no I don’t want a damn refund. I’ve bought 4 AA NiMH batteries for this damn thing, a high end battery charger, a 2gb SD card, a TV-Out cable, and a screen protector all of which I have no use for besides my GP2X. Getting my money back for the console still screws me out of quite a bit of money for those accessories. For me there is only one satisfactory solution the problem, GPL compliance.

“The spirit of the GPL”? Whatever that is… What that quote says is that the FSF as a matter of course does not attempt to get anything out of somebody other than GPL compliance. It’s not about money, or admission of guilt, it’s about just getting the offender to comply with the licensee. As for the public humiliation being served up by some pissed off individuals, why else would someone comply with the GPL if there was no consequence for non-compliance? I’ve said it over and over and over again but it’s not sinking into your skull apparently.

What exactly has GPH done for the open source community other than profit off it?

You can’t support open source by violating the GPL.

ps – stop being a fucktard.
