Gp32linux And Opie :) [pda]

I don't think that Linux is useless on GP32, but yet I think that a webbrowser is. At least my GP has no connection to the Internet. :/
Mine does, or at least, it's about 7 solder connections away. The GP32 has a UART with full handshaking signals. This means a modem can easily be connected to it. And, with a modem comes i-net.

new
a true browser
with gif support
i hoped it will be faster , but i think in fact it s even slower than the 2 others :(
this one doesnt use qt or opie
and dont have a nice file select window like the 2nd one i released

http://www.gp32linux.com/linux/links.rar
links complains that it can't write a config file, which makes sense since the filesystem is readonly, as far as i know. all i need to do is copy and overwrite the files in the archive, right? the other two browsers worked fine
dont worry about the warning messages
it works
but as i said , it takes too long to load :(
i think we have something like 4600KB free ram and
links take something like 4300KB , and i think it uses other libs too
------------
but i am sure if we had more time and developpers
we could make it lighter

there are lighter browsers http://www.dillo.org/
but it uses gtk lib
gtk needs to be compiled with frame buffer support or uses kdrive [ small xfree]
but gtk is a mess to compile for arm [ and kdrive too]
as we have binary compatibilty with ipaq, we could maybe use familiar / gpe binaries

cyberic compiled kdrive, but he has some trouble to make the mouse work for now
and he didnt tried yet gtk

when i started to work on apps for gp32linux i tought first about gtk
but as i didnt manage to compile it for arm, i switched to qte / opie
qte can be quite light, if you compile it whit few widgets

there are some people who managed to build a smaller qte , using uclibc
but it needs a lot of patches, and they didnt release them yet

the probleme is that to compile some apps, you need a specifi toolkit
[ i ve got 4 differents toolkits i think ] gcc 2.95.3, gcc 3.3 , gcc3.4 with uclibc or libc
so imagine how fun it is to find what toolkit works for what app ...

if you want to help , install linux [ there is even knoppix that can be used from cd]
and openembedded
and try to build something [ it s quite easy , e.g. oemake opie-minesweep]
i tried but didnt work [ yeah, sometimes you have to even use a different linux distribution ( i ve got 2 , mandrake and debian ) ]

Would be handy to have a tool that would automatically copy your favorite website from internet onto your GP32 (SMC), just like the function in IE...

Looks great!!!!

Here is a link to a virtual keyboard for X Windows systems, there is a small keyboard already built in so it can come in handy!
http://homepage3.nifty.com/tsato/xvkbd/

I just tried X-Box Linux today and I think that the GP32 version is going to be great. The X-Box one had good controls with a virtual keyboard but was on a TV so it was blurry, a problem GP32 users wont have to face.

i cant seem to get this version ta work

i have overwriten the files but do i need to change anything in the start file??

its differant from the other one and i dunno which # to take of, i cant tell which program starts where

how long dus it take to load? i have had the cursor come up but thats all that happens.

mabe im to impatient lol how long it take about?

well just in case you didnt read all the messages
we have binary compatibilty with ipaq and zaurus

but the gp32 has only 8MB Ram
[ ipaq and zaurus 32]

i didnt know delilinux , it s cool :) , but it needs 2X8MB = 16MB ram
so, what you can do is ask ipaq and zaurus devleoppers if they dont want
to make lighter apps ;)
Sounds like a good reason for everyone to get the ram upgrade. 32/64 meg anyone :D .
