I know its probably a longshot. But is there a chance that 2.3 will get released tonight that would work with Punch-Out!!?

Going out of town in the morning, and was really wanting to take it with me hehe. Thanks!

It's a pretty big long shot I'm afraid. I'm also heading off tonight . I've got the preliminary stuff working for Punch Out but it's giving me some weird results. I've even tried different drivers from other versions of MAME.
I'll have another look tonight.

I'm currently working on getting Midway Bally games going - Spy Hunter, Tron, Discs of Tron, Rampage and Tapper.

Just wondering how the Midway Bally driver is going. Should be interesting what configuration you decide on for Spy Hunter. Any other cool new additions you're working on? GP32MAME has easily become the best emulator for GP32. :)

That's right i'm not Japanese. What's that got to do with it anyway? :)

Been on holiday for a week so I've missed some things. Good to see that Franxis has been busy with release 2.5 of MAME GP2X and incorporated samples and the new Z80 core. Thanks Franxis!

I've made some good progress with the Bally Midway drivers and I've improved the screen stretch modes and will explain why:
The interesting thing with Rampage and Spy Hunter and Tapper is that they are all have resolutions of 512 x 480 which is way too big for the GP32 screen. Half the resolution (256x240) actually fits quite nicely so that's what they are displayed as - but you have to set the stretch mode on.

Rampage and Tapper and Discs of Tron play really great, but I'm still having some wee problems with Spy Hunter. But I'll get that sorted out.

I'm also trying to get "The Empire Strikes Back" fully working as this quits about 1 second into the game. This is a protection issue and fixed in a later version of MAME.

Welcome back from your vacation. Hope you got yourself some well deserved R&R.
Spy Hunter's controls will definetly be a challenge. It had a analog controller similiar to Star Wars not to mention a comfortable sit down booth. Too bad the GP32's processor won't be fast enough to play the Peter Gunn theme music. The catchiest arcade tune ever and one of the few that didn't drive me crazy after a few minutes of play. I would have loved to listen to that through my headphones. Oh well I can dream.
Does this scaling/stretching pave the way for more Bally/Midway future games like Satan's Hollow, Sarge, Arch Rival, and Pigskin? Sorry slaanesh, I'm being greedy and you just got back. ;)

Sarge is already running. Satan's Hollow should be doable.

I've got Empire Strikes Back running now. It's looking pretty good too.

I'll have a look at Spy Hunter now and see if that Peter Gunn music is possible.

Mind you Rampage and Tapper run great at Frameskip 1 so it should be fine...

So I've got this driver working now. Satan's Hollow and all that seem to work okay.

Spy Hunter! That is also working BUT like you said it's a challenge to get the controls configured.
It seems to have:
  • Steering
  • Acceleration
  • Guns
  • Gear Shift
  • Smoke Screen
  • Oil
  • Missiles
  • Weapon Truck
How did the original game work? Did it actually have a button for each of these? I remember playing it when I was young but I can't remember the controls.

His picture says it best. Combining buttons might work(i.e. smoke and oil, guns and van). The biggest problem is the analog steering wheel, necessary for skillfully ramming the enemy(never mastered that myself). The steering makes it impossible to play on PalmMAME. The car veers way off too fast. Keeping my fingers crossed you can configure Spy Hunter to work on the GP32.

Ahaha!...He was referring to some dumbass who was willing to pay a programmer to make a working version of mame for the gp2x...but only if he or she was japanese. Lol

Well the main controls seem to be
  • Steering
  • Acceleration
  • Gear Shift
  • Machine Gun
I will propose the following default mappings
Steering = Joystick left and right
Acceleration = Button A
Gear Shift = Button B
Machine Gun = Joystick up (as your finger will post likely be on the accelerator)

The other buttons I will just map to select, start and trigger L & R - the player can re-define these as required.

Which leads me to my next point - in a future release, I'm going to change the interface a bit.
Having a dedicated button for rotating the screen, pause, insert coin and player 1 start is a bit of a waste of precious buttons. I will probably make the right shoulder button present an On-Screen-Display (OSD) which will display the following list of options:

INSERT CREDIT PLAYER 1
PLAYER 1 START
EXIT GAME
DISPLAY FPS
PAUSE
RESET GAME
ROTATE SCREEN
SCREEN GAMMA
INSERT CREDIT PLAYER 2
PLAYER 2 START

Keeping the button held will display this meny. Up and down on the stick to highlight an option. Options can be toggled/activated by moving stick left or right. Letting go of the trigger will make the OSD disappear.

Comments? Will this make inserting a credit and starting a game too painful? (The options are listed in order of common use, I think).
The idea is that there will be more buttons available for other controls with the possibility of mapping these extra buttons to common functions anyway because...

Eventually I'd like to re-instate the traditional MAME menus so that controls and dip-switches can be configured :)

But that will be a bit later.

This is an excellent idea but I think the START button would be a better selection as it is awkward to use in a game underneath the control pad. Automatically activating the menu when pressed(with no need to hold it) could serve double as a pause feature and pressing the START button again to return to the game. Adding the MAME menus in a future release is undeniably a HUGE plus for both GPMAME versions. It's really impressive the way your managing to build on GP32MAME even with its limitation. I can hardly wait for that future release. :D

Yes, the only thing is that the START button is the main button for rotated games - which I personally use a fair bit. And I'd like the button to be the same in either landscape or portrait mode.
Having the right-shoulder button free would make some games that need four buttons sort of possible. Robotron is one game that comes to mind - this works really well on the GP2X because it has more buttons that match a 2nd stick.
I guess I could make the whole thing configurable - so the user can select what they want to use to bring up the menu... :)

Your right! I forgot how essential the START button is with rotated games. I really suck at shooters so I don't use it much. Your highscores are safe from me. Your OSD menu idea is still brilliant however you choose to apply it and it's definetly something to look forward to in a future release.
