For how long have you wanted your GP2X to read to you in a Microsoft Sam-style voice?

That dream is now a reality! :p

Flite is a Text-To-Speech application, a portable version of Festival. It can read .txt files, albeit strangely. It comes packaged with kounch's file selector, I hope he doesn't mind ;)

Download - that link will be going down on the 2nd of April because I'm no longer paying for hosting. If you lot like it enough I'll host it on the file archive.

How very creepy :p great port, but I'd like to see what it's reading since a lot of the time it's confusing. Also, a volume boost would be good.

The gp2x needs more of these 'strange' pc utilities ported over :)

Neat. Actually pretty decent voice. Reminds me of See-And-Say machines.

One problem, the selector doesn't pass the file to flite, only the reference, and flite reads the reference ie. "/mnt/sd/textname".

I'm seriously laughing my ass off here ... I tested this with Lincoln's Gettysberg Address  It sounds great! Thanks :)

I tried the GPL agreement text... I can understand every word. This is great! I hope someone take it further. It realy helps...

PS: though I didn't like the Stephen Hawking jokes... very rude.

Yup - an amazing guy - nobody with Motor Neurone Disease has lived as long as he has. And when you consider what he has achieved during his life, you have to be impressed...

Am I dense or is there no way to exit once it starts reading? I tried every button combo I could think of but ended up just rebooting.

Brian

There's no way to exit at the moment until it finishes talking, at which point it'll exit. This is just a straight port, pure and simple.

Mr. Hawking has a sense of humor as seen here in a letter from his office to the people behind MC Hawkings (Steve Hawkings singing gansta rap).

sounds good
however each time i try open a word doc with it it goes back to the main menu.

I think it only reads .txt files ...

That's because it doesn't understand Word files. Only plain text.

Also, it was indeed suggested that I should call it a Stephen Hawking emulator. I decided not to, and stuck with Flite. I'd rather not have this thread turned into a debate on the ethics of Stephen Hawking jokes. :)

Great guy, by the way.
