I know everyone here is talking about audio hardware, but I'd like to note a piece of software that would work really well. I also think it's already ported.
Quasar Media Player is a Qt3-based media player that uses mplayer as a backend. It's actually made for the similar Zaurus clamshell PDAs.
Does anyone know if Debian armel packages will be binary compatible? If they are, we have another very nice solution for music.
