I'm finally starting to run low on DVD's to watch and need some help! I'm basically looking for any more space epic/opera/horror/whatever movies! Although I'm quite not sure why, they are one of my favourite types of films. I don't know whether it's down to the seclusion usually present or simple because there are usually lasers and shiny things involved, but it simply captivates me. Unfortunately I'm now struggling to think of any more to buy and trawling through play.com's complete catalogue doesn't really bring up anything.

Below is a list of all of these sorts of films that I have on DVD. Some of them are awesome and some of them are not so good. Please help me expand my list or use it to expand yours!

Anyway, here it goes:
- 2010
- 2001: A Space Odyssey
- Alien 1/2/3/4/AvP
- Apollo 13
- Dante 01 < It's in french, but pretty cool
- Deep Impact
- Defying Gravity < Awesome TV series for everyone that missed it. Cancelled now :( Mainly because everyone missed it :p
- Event Horizon
- Firefly/Serenity
- Lost In Space < I know….. I still like it. If you watch the extras on the DVD you see that they cut out a lot of awesome stuff.
- Moon
- Red Dwarf < It's lolz :D
- Solaris < American version
- Space Cowboys
- Sphere
- Star Wars 1/2/3/4/5/6
- Sunshine < Watched tonight and is my last spacey film :(
- Supernova < Pretty cool, although at times it feels like you're watching softcore porn on Channel 5
- The Abyss
- The Core

You'll also probably note that not all of them are actually in space, but rather in the ocean. These sorts of films also seem to have a similar feel to them, so.. watery films are ok to give aswell!

I guess to a lesser extent, I could add on:
- Predator 1/2
- Stargate
- The Chronicles of Riddick/Pitch Black
- The Fifth Element
- The Thing (1982) < Ok.. it's people on the surface, but they are on their own and there are sort of aliens! It's also my list so I can include it...

At the minute my main considerations are getting some Star Trek DVD's, but all of the series' are still too expensive for me to justify buying. That's the same reason I've not bought any of the Stargate TV series on DVD yet.

Soooo.... hit me with what you've got! Am I missing out on any truly epic movie's set in deep space or am I trying to dig too deeply into a crappy/dead genre?

Edit: So I've decided to put together a full list of all of the films and TV series recommended so far. Keep the suggestions coming in and I'll try to update it! I know that a lot of the recommendations don't fall into the original request, but they are related so YAY! I've categorised it somewhat, but may have put some in the wrong places. Let me know if I have

In the "whatever" cathegory: Starship trooper (3 of em, god, bad, and ugly)
I think it fits your description at least. And i actually like the good, and the ugly one (first and third.) (And no, they aren't actually named the good, the bad and the ugly)
B!

Isn't Lexx pretty much.. porn?

It is something I've considered though, so I may come back to it :p

I linked a guy to this thread and he has given me:
- Babylon 5
- Battlestar Galactica
- Earth: Final Conflict
- Earth 2
- Farscape
- Odyssey 5

I'm thinking of picking up Odyssey 5 as it's cheap, and Babylon 5 as it's meant to be pretty awesome and is also cheap :p

I don't know how, but I'd completely forgotten to check out Starship Troopers even though I've been meaning to watch them!

The Thing (1982). Fantastic shape shifting alien + intense paranoia + terrified people stuck in the antarctic = one awesome movie.

OK. Not set in space or in water, but there is a spaceship in there and obviously an alien. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0084787/

This is a must own movie.

No, but weirdly that is some urban myth which surrounds it. I think you will be pleasantly supplied with how original the first film is, I still enjoy the madness of it now.

hmmmm... ok!! I'll pick Lexx up at some point.

pssst... iprice, The Thing was already in the bottom of my list :D Great movie! I only saw it for the first time a couple of weeks ago. Was really impressed.

Following on from guidance from some other guys, I've just ordered a bunch of DVD's which are in the same sort of area as the films I listed above.
- Species 1-4 < I know they are a wee bit lame, but meh :p
- THX 1138
- Outland
- Red Planet
- Soldier < Not really related, but I got reminded by another film mentioned.
- Ghosts Of Mars
- Mission To Mars
- The Black Hole (1979)
- Wing Commander
- The People Under The Stairs

- Farscape

This.

Also, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. In my opinion, the best science fiction ever made.

For TV stuff, Lexx, Babylon 5 and Farscape are all great, IMHO.

As for the DVDs in your bought list, well my honest opinions are:

THX 1138= interesting
Black Hole= confused
Outland= Sean Connery!
Soldier= I have a soft spot for this movie. I really like the idea of a main character who is a complete blank. It might not work fully, but I enjoyed it.
The People Under The Stairs= A fantastic, if twisted film. Watch this first!
The rest= Sadly I have seen them all. Drink heavily before attempting to watch any of them.

Also, Space: Above and Beyond is a great(short) series and if I could suggest some anime, Planetes is great.

But seriously, watching Wing Commander sober. Don't. If you value your sanity at all, drink heavily beforehand. :)

I'll make a mental note to get the beer ready for all the mars films ;) I know they aren't all brilliant, but I don't mind too much and most of them were cheap, so yay!

I'm kind of glad you've commented on Soldier. I looked it up after I first saw Blade Runner, but decided to give it a miss due to crappy reviews. It's kept appearing when I've been looking up and researching other things, so finally decided to give it a go.

If you speak German or can get a hold of any kind of translated version, Space Patrol would be a recommendation. Arguably the best German science fiction TV series from the 1960s.

Live action only? Cowboy Bebop is a must have.

Which Solaris did you watch? The original Russian is a much better film, but less spacey and more head-spacey

The Evil Dead trilogy!!! Can't get much better than Bruce Campbell with a chainsaw for a hand!

Which version of The Thing? The original black and white was way better than the Kurt Russell one.

Any Twilight Zone episode, they all kick total ass!!! The original series only.
