Gbax Tv Out Cable Review

Settings-> TV Out

That does absolutely nothing when i select it, i usually run the mplayer_tv.gpu file from the utilities menu, then select the video I want to play, and there is no option to choose pal or ntsc... is the option only there in later firmwares?

This is the EXACT same thing I got from play-asia 2 months ago. http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-d1-49-en-70-11n7.html
1) Most of us trust Craig more than Play-Asia.
2) Most of us don't want to pay import tax.
3) The cable Play-Asia were selling was apparently absolutely rubbish and only worked if you forced it into the GP2X.

But I'm unhappy at the moment, Craig told me a couple of days ago that he wouldn't get any TV-Out cables until next week due to high demand. And he's charging me extortionate delivery prices. Way to go, Craig <_<

I upgraded to 1.2.1, now I can select PAL and the menu works... in colour... BUT now my integral 1GB card, which worked fine with the original and 1.1.0 firmware isn't recognised! This sucks SO badly i cannot even describe.... AAARRRGGGHHHHHHHHH

Nickspoon: you only pay import duty on packages over £18, and playasia have a good reputation. My cable is from playasia, and I have no problems with it (any more!)

Edit: I really need sleep... i blame our baby... i forgot the sd/nand menu swap... the card IS working!

ok so wtf di i need to get started? I have an svideo outlet on my tv, so what else is needed to get color tv out up and running?
You need the TV-Out cable, a phono male-male cable (or two for stereo sound) and an S-Video extension cable (male-female).

I think I need to talk to Craig about cancelling my order, then.
EDIT: No, I don't, Play-Asia has 1-2 weeks delivery.

ok, so the phono male-male cable is used for making the female red and white plugs on the adapter males so they fit on my tv right? If so i have that checked off already. all i need is an extension cable now and to buy the adapter. thanks nickspoon :)

I just got the cables I needed from maplin to connect it all up today. Its all in the previous post in this topic. I also got the tv out cable from gp2x the one were u have to push up the adapter into the gp2x ext port for the tv out to work. The tv out from gbax looked exactly the same, in the same packaging, same connections etc... But this has been fixed so you don't have to put the adapter upwards.

I've played a video on the tv via the tv out and its perfect in every way. The only problem was the sound was coming out of the speakers as well as the tv. The lcd screen was off so hopefully in the next firmware update they will turn the sound off on the speakers to save on battery power. Its just a shame it still came with the silly connections so u have to buy extra cables to get it to work on your tv.

Well, it really is more an adapter (i.e. just a set of ports) than it is a cable. IMHO this is a good idea, because I know there's ~1 hojillion ways to layout a TV room, so different people need cables anywhere from 6-10 ft. It's pretty much a GP2Xish way of letting the customer get the exact cable length they want, the same way we don't get any SD card so you can pick the capacity you need.

I do agree that the heterogenous M/F/F is an aberrant choice of connectors though, even all M would make more sense.

BTW make sure you select the current region when enabling TVOUT from the gp2x i.e PAL europe UK NTSC the rest of the world

thanks Omar... i'm thinking rationally again and think this is the issue.... but where do i choose ntsc or pal? i'm using firmware 1.1.0, but i don't see the option anywhere?
Settings-> TV Out

i dont think 1.1.0 supports pal but dont quote me on that im running 1.2.1 so i havent tested it using 1.1.0

try upgrading to the latest firmware using

Firmware 1.2.1 alternative updater

youll find it in the gp32x file archive just read the instructions and make sure you understand them properly if you need any help just drop me a PM.

Good Luck :)

BTW By updating you'll be able to play games aswell on the TV.

I just went with one of these RCA adapters from ebay.
The tv im hooking it up to at the moment doesnt have S-video anyhow, so i figured this is my best bet for now.

Problem with that is, it's Female-Female, which means you'll need a male-male RCA connector to actually put it in your TV.

Well, now he just needs one regular 3-part RCA cable, which altogether should be less than S-video-RCA video converter+2-part RCA for sound, his only other option.

Thats the exact one I got from maplin, great adapter. But you do need the audio leads to connect it up to the tv still. I got a 3 way audio to audio lead from maplin so I had no problems at all. Works like a dream :D

Paradox,

Do not buy the adaptor from me, if you can't work out how to use it just DON'T buy it.

-Craig

Shit dude. Harsh.

Allan.

Craig's typically unhelpful approach to customer support.

Personally i'm seriously put out by the insane choice of s-video for the tv-out. First i tried a cheap s-video to scart adaptor, which only gave a black and white picture. So now i've got one of the s-video to phono adaptors from maplin mentioned previously in this thread, but after running the video via a phono type cable (as craigix himself suggests) I still get a b&w pic... So far as i'm concerned the tv-out function is currently an unusable PoS... I'm sick of constantly throwing money at the gp2x (add this to batteries, charger, sd-card which is recognised, etc... it all starts seriously adding up  )

I thought Craig was a little harsh, but he's anything but unhelpful. He has been helping out this community dilligently for as long as I've been even lurking here. The guy is under a lot of stress, Dig have been dicking him around for weeks now, and complete tools like cyclops haven't been helping. As for the s-video conundrum, all it takes is a little googling.

A SCART connector only supports composite video and connecting an s-video cable to a SCART that has an "s-video" receptable will result in a black and white signal. Unlike "S-Video to SCART™" adapters sold in Europe and Australia (that provide you with a black/white signal) our adapters allow you to transmit the COLOUR SIGNAL.

The above was from here. They sell working svideo - scart adapters.

Here is a male to female s-video adaptor, which will work in reverse, is good quality, and will set you back a whopping 3 dollars.

As for s-video to phono, this little adapter will help you out. They can be found much cheaper, but I can't be bothered, do the price check yourself. I recommend finding a cheap audio-visual expert store, and ordering it all through them to save shipping - it should set you back around 10 dollars.

Everybody happy?

Allan.

EDIT: please don't think of me as not reading the entire post, I understand that some of you quite easily worked it out yourselves. It just got me angry that people started whinging cause they couldn't spend five minutes with granddaddy Google.
