Gamescom 2019

MOAR!!!

Even more pics, this time Nintendo and Sega, but first Dragon ball Z.
booth_dragonballz.jpg
They had a massive 'evil' dragon above the booth.

Then Nintendo, they usually have red walls with their logo.
nintendo_wall.jpg
Who's wall is this?

nintendo_games.jpg nintendo_podium.jpg nintendo_zelda.jpg
They usually provide people with an open space an enough opportunity to play their games.

Not sure if this is a first but they also had indie games this year:
nintendo_indie.jpg nintendo_indie2.jpg

And a special booth that doesn't allow photo/video for the Witcher 3 (is it so good/bad they need to hide it? we know what it looks like already)
nintendo_witcher3.jpg
The SWitcher?

Sega also had a booth, but is was more modest then Nintendo.
sega_booth.jpg
@JDTAY pics or it didn't happen: Humankind.

A small Mega Drive (Genesis) and a large controller:
sega_mdmini.jpg sega_megacontroller.jpg

And this year they had a special booth so I can again not meet Yu Suzuki:
sega_shenmue3.jpg
Good thing they don't reply to e-mail to setup a meeting ;-(

If you want to play Tetris whyle you wait on the Haer Cutter, on your cool GPD Win, but it’s doesn’t boot in Windows instead it’s wants to Install a half hour of Update, and you then decide to go back to Pandora as your Everyday Carry Handheld

The Win is cool, it’s impressive to play GTA 4 on such a tiny Device, and whit the ability to play X86 games from GOG or your favorite Simulator Games
e6fd6bc24fd4174361c63d8786b5b53a.jpg

The Win is currently my Work PC at home, because HDMI , but I want my Pyra to take this role..

The Win is a cool Handheld, and I’m happy whit it, but I think the Pyra will fit my needs much more

Lots of Peaple use Windows because they ditnt know or ditnt learned to use Linux, Microsoft had more money for PR than the people behind Linux..
Every Game would work whit Linux if everyone would use Linux..
When I had PC in School they were DOS PCs, and it was Mid of the 90.thes,
Linux is only the System used from some „Nerds“ , who wants to be spezial, because they lonely
The cool Peaple use Windows, and the coolest Apple ^^

I expected most people here to have a strong preference for GNU/Linux over Windows. Maybe I did because one of the Pyra's important marketing points seems to be that it is open and people who care about that often prefer GNU/Linux over Windows, for obvious reasons.

I wonder how good MacOS runs on the Pyra ^^
I was also a huge Windows User until I installed Ubuntu to be at least a bit prepare for the Pandora

A lot of people can be wrong...
I'm actualy pretty happy with my Windows 10, mainly because it just runs the games I want to play on PC. Fast, without any tinkering. ;) I'm not even sure if Overwatch runs on Linux at all. I know it doesn't run on Mac OS, Diablo 3 does for instance.
Linux is still a niche when it comes to gaming, even if it made some progress (Steam etc.). Still to many distributions, to many cluttering. Performance is also often worse than under Windows which is the most annoying thing actualy. We only can hope it will get better but since you can get Win 10 basicly for free, I see no reason to not use it for gaming.

Well, that is your point of view, not mine... when my personal data is used by the company, I considered I paid with my data, so I cannot get Windows for free except if I never connect it to the Internet, which is not acceptable to me.

Eeeeh... I did derail again, didn't I? I guess I should go to the gamescom thread to stop my thirst for news. Oops that's where I am ^^

It's a catch 22. I moved on to Linux for a good while, but ended back on Windows, because half of my steam games weren't available. As a lot of steam games are on windows, most other game developers will consider supporting windows as the primary platform.

I think that is the exact reason why we should convince more people to not ever use it. It's not free like libre software at all. They collect private data on a massive scale and "just because it's convenient for games" should be no reason to sell out your privacy. I have a windows 7 install, that I am not not proud of and I am aware, that it's necessary for lots of reasons, but people should know that most most daily tasks can be easily done on a linux system, out of the box, completely free and nowadays without a lot of knowledge of computers, same as a mac.

If they aren't "into" computers, I think part of that problem is most people will use Windows at work, and thus will prefer it at home, as it's familiar. The fact Linux can look and operates very similar is irrelevant, they won't get past that "it's different" hump. This is from my personal experience with people YMMV.

Proton helps a lot (although it may have detrimental effects on developer motivations to specifically support Linux), and perhaps even Google Stadia may do so as I believe it is also Linux based.

Back on topic, did I miss if any of the prototype units have been recieved by anyone other than a "Pyra developer" yet?

In my experience those are the 2 most common reasons that people have for using Windows. That is wanting to play Windows exclusive games or not wanting to use a new OS. Though I doubt that people using Windows at work is the most important reason that Windows is familiar to people. Windows has come pre-installed with most computers for a long time now which may also have played an important part.

Some Pyra's at Gamescon were final units, right? Or were they all prototypes?

While I'm all for openness (RISC-V, Linux) and use it personally I understand that the majority of people don't have experience with it. They also don't know these small handhelds and one with Windows on it might pull them into our world.
At Gamescom this year there was Facebook (due to VR glasses, but also Instagram and other stuff) and Google (Youtube and Stadia) and it's a trend I'm not sure what to think about. I love the retro section, all stuff we know how it works and we can touch and experiment with. These cloud solutions are the opposite, but it provides a nice service to play games everywhere and anytime you want.

Well, now the last set of pics from me :-(
Some more things from Gamescom you might not have seen!

What do people do at Gamescom when they get hungry? They eat obviously.
It's allowed to bring your own food/drinks btw. But I got some fries at this stand.
fries.JPG
There are other stands to, while I didn't check this year I think there is pizza, noodles, burgers, sandwiches and probably more. Although I always feel it's not that much choice, not sure why. Prices are similar to a festival, not cheap.

What about other companies that people have different feelings about: G2A
press_G2A.jpg
They use to have a stand but I guess I didn't see it this year. This was a press group filming a gaming rig.

At Gamescom you don't only see games you also see gaming related products, like PC hardware.
hardware_pc.jpg
It's a regular (small) PC which could be used for gaming.
hardware_cases.jpg
These are modded cases, they are nice to look at. Especially if you like spaceships.
starwars.JPG
If you like spaceships and Star Wars, in the cosplay area you can dress-up and take a pic in this spaceship.
Probably someone knows what type this is, some kind of starfighter?
I think it's not related tot Battlefront 2 but it could have been.

What kind of hardware do you see at Gamescom?
hardware_rollercoastersim.jpg
The obvious racing setups are there but this was a roller-coaster simulator.

Some more cases, this time a retro case with modern hardware in it.
hardware_retrocase.jpg
I can already hear people complaining about your antique gaming setup.

Some hardware manufacturers also show their stuff, like Samsung.
hardware_samsungssd.JPG
They have some SSDs and SD-cards here. SD-card, who uses those for gaming :-D (We do!)

And if your hardware breaks who do you call?
hardware_ifixit.jpg
Nobody, ifixit can be used for self repair and their online manuals for this helps.

At Gamescom you can also buy some merchandise like: t-shirts, bags, toys, posters etc.
merch1.jpg merch2.JPG merch_bags.jpg
Sometimes they just sell cute stuff that isn't related to gaming. You also see some manga stuff.

And there is also an area for companies related to Gaming, or just jobs.
other_usk.jpg
Ever wanted to work for the USK? Move to Germany!
There is also some Gaming related studies there and stuff like German army or police.

And sometimes you see hardware you didn't expect to see.
lego_car.JPG lego_more.JPG
Like Lego. They also had a RC Lego car, but didn't make a pic.

And you can see a special XBox, the development kit, running games:
spotted_xdk.jpg
Here's one resting in the grass.
spotted_xdk_closeup.jpg
A close-up from the XDK.

And there was the XBox Pro controller in pieces.
hardware_xboxcontroller.jpg
DIY assembly controller?

And Indie games, they are always nice to see.

If you can use Linux, you should be skilled enough to setup Windows for propper privacy. ;) My Windows does not give relevant data to MS, it does not even update until I want it to update. It's a little bit of work but it is no obstacle. And again, it just runs my games without any issues.

I remember back then at GC in Leipzig, drinks and food was already very expensive. I'm sure the prices at the Cologne GC are even more criminal. I always brought my own food.

No problem with WINE 4 and DXVK:
Looks good, could need some benchmarks compared to an comparable Win System for performance analysis.
