Some games are *must* plays for a platform. The genres you like will vary wildly, but if you like a genre, some games are must plays in it. They define the genre, per se.

ie: Role Playing. You've never lived unless you've played Dungeon Master, Chaos Strikes Back, and Captive. Theres others too, like Bloodwych, but I think DM/CSB were the pinnacle. To me anyway :)

ie: Shooters. Xenon 2: Megablast. Xenon 1. I forget others :)

ie: Sports; Speedball 2.

ie: Top-down racing: Super Sprint, Badlands.

ie: 3d Racer: .. can't recall.. there ewas an Atari arcade one, that was a serious simulation.. good physics, et al, and a cow you could drive into. Hard Drivin', that was it.

ie: Puzzle/run: Time Bandits.

ie: Puzzle: Arkanoid

These are off the top of my head.. but what are the best, in your opniion, the genre defining games?

I keep hearing about Stunt Car Racer. Good?
Here is some screenshots.. looks intiguing :)

a few of my Atari Gems :)

3d Racer - Powerdrome, kinda like wipeout but more of a serious sim where just getting around the track is a challenge. Stunt Car Racer as you mentioned (Amazing game). F1GP (Played it lastnight on GP32 and it plays very well but slightly slow). Oh and finally the great Buggy Boy :)

Strategy/Adventure - Populous, Defender of the Crown, Risk, Civ, North & South, Pirates, Rocket Ranger, The Sentinal, Midwinter, Mercenary Series, Sim City

Platform Games - James Pond 2 Robocod, Rainbow Islands/Bubble Bobble/Parasol Stars

Shoot em ups - Oids (possibly the best shooter there has ever been IMO), both Xenon games, Zout & Xout

RolePlaying - Completly agree with you

Flight Games - Elite & Frontier (Spent a very long time drifting through the galaxy esp in Frontier), Spitfire, Flight Simulator ( All I ever remember about this was I spent weeks learing flight manouvers that weaved through the golden gate bridge :) )

and a few misc games I fondly remember, Sensible Soccer, Wizball, Robocop 1 & 3, anything Star Wars even if it was no good :), anything by the Bitmap Brothers (Sensi, Gods, Magic Pockets, Xenons etc.), Strider Games, and loads loads more

I do apologise but I just gotta go play again

He he, I spent my dinner hour today playing Stunt Car Racer. It was an all time classic fav of mine! - plays fine with retro boosters on but slightly slow otherwise. Don't think this is a fault of castaway in particular but more that of the game itself. It was more about staying on the track than being a speed demon :)

BEat 'em up: Street Fighter

Shoot 'em up : Truxton, nemesis, gradius, TigerHeli.. etc..

Puzzel : Arkanoid, Puzzel Bobble

3d racer: Overlander (plays great on the emu too, nice and fast)
shooter: blood money, Oids
poker: teenage queen (beats the hell outta hoyle casino on the GBC.. can anyone suggest others?)

anything by the Bitmap Brothers (Sensi, Gods, Magic Pockets, Xenons etc.),

Sensi was made by Sensible Software, hence the name! Bitmap Brothers' Chaos Engine is great too, anyone got it to work?

Every game Sensible made at this time was amazing, Wizball, Wizkid, Cannon Fodder, S.E.U.C.K., Mega-lo-Mania, 3-D Tennis. And now Codemasters had them working on Mike Tyson Boxing...

RPG: Ultima games are class if a bit basic until 6. Heimdall. There was a game called Moonstone on the Amiga, I don't think it appeared on ST sadly...

Platform: First Samurai, Gods, Impossamole (I don't know why I like it but I do)

Flight sim: Knights of the Sky

Tank sim(!): War in the Gulf

Sport: Sensi, Sensi, Sensi, Sensi! Still the best game ever made! :)

Sensible Soccer.. I've got the single disk version (someone sent me to take a peek at) so I'll see whats going on.

I really loved a lot of games that others I'm sure hated.. Phantasie series. Loved them. They run, too :)

Sensible Soccer.. got any screenshots of the ST one?

Here's a lovely gif from The Little Green Desktop, sorry if it takes a while to load!

If you get Sensi working I'll buy something of you for sure, though I probably will anyway! ;)

here are the games that i remember playing alot on ST/Amiga...

Racing/Car games:
Stunt Car Racer (best game ever almost!!!), Supercars 2, Buggy Buy (2nd game i ever played in my
life), Chase HQ 1 & 2, Outrun, Lotus

Beat Em Ups:
IK, IK+ (obviously!), Dragon Ninja, Double Dragon 2, Final Fight (the street fighter conversions were poor though), Ninja Gaiden, Barbarian, Body Blows, Shadow Fighter

Shoot Em Ups:
R-Type, Xenon, Xenon 2, Apidya (did this ever come out on the ST?)

Platformers/Action:
Turrican, Turrican 2 (best game ever almost numero 2!!!!), Giana Sisters (1st game i EVER played), Rainbow Islands (awesome!), Parasol Stars (i prefer the PC Engine version though!), Bubble Bobble, Kid Gloves, Robocod, Superfrog

Puzzles:
Puzznic, Tetris

Sports:
Speedball 2 (Ice Cream!)

Strategy:
Worms (Amiga original was very fun!)

.....and on other GP32 (potentially) EMULATABLE platforms, i'd say:

ALL THE STREET FIGHTER 2 GAMES/VARIANTS/CLONES (i'm dying to play a decent one on one beat up on the GP32....hurry up perfect SNES emu please!)

Bust-A-Move/Puzzle Bubble (have GG version but prefer NGPC one)

Baku Baku Animal (GG)

Columns (PC Engine)

Bomberman series (PC Engine)

R-Type, Gunhed, Final Soldier, Super Star Soldier (PC Engine)

Super Aleste (best shoot em up EVER - SNES)

Thunderforce 3 (equally best shoot em up EVER - Megadrive)

Gunstar Heroes (one of the best games ever too.... - Megadrive, but i'm using the rather great GG
version for now)
ALL MARIO GAMES on SNES, NES
ALL SONIC GAMES on Megadrive (some of the 8 bit ones are a bit poor though)

Revenge Of Shinobi/Shinobi 3 (Megadrive - awesome music!)
Rocket Knight Adventures (Megadrive)

Puyo Puyo / Mean Bean Machine (GG)

Streets Of Rage 2 (best side scrolling fighter EVER - Megadrive; the GG version pales in comparison)

Wonderboy In Monsterland (PC Engine - this version seems better than the others)

Bugs Bunny (GB - simple but fun!)

Pitman/Catrap (GB - frustrating but addictive)

Mario Land 2 (GB - still great!)

SNK vs CAPCOM (NGPC - brilliant game!)

that's all i can think of for now anyway (no doubt more will spring to mind soon!)

Sim - Gato, Fighter Bomber (activision)

Bat'n'Ball - Addictaball

Platform - Rodland, Nebulus, Rainbow Islands

Puzzle/Maze - Time Bandits, Bubble Ghost

Challenge - Bobo, Bad Cat

God Sim - Little Computer People, Populous

Action - Hunter

3D Racer - Test Drive, Stunt Car

Shooter - Oids, Xenon, Pang

Id just like to mention one of the best games ever:

Laser Squad

A fantastic conversion and one of the only turn-based strategy games which grabbed my friends and I so hard. I still remember us having a sheet over the monitor so the other player couldn't see the moves we made on our turn ^_^

Oh, and another, this time a shooter:

Backlash

A fantastic update of Encounter on the 8bits (well, C64 & Atari), sort of like Battlezone on speed ^_^

Well strictly speaking they are more arcade than strategy.

In regards to CC,how do take direct control of a manta? I can fly them using the autopilot but no matter where I click I cannot fly them directly and yes I've witched the autopilot off...

Switch to joystick mode in castaway menu and then click on the joystick icon next to the autopilot option.

I'm sorry my friend, but it certainly is more strategy than arcade. ie. setting up resource bases etc and the islands.

Anyway who cares ?

Enjoy.

Thanks for the info. Is there anyway to find out what version of CC you are using? the first CC release was bugged (the enemy carrier could plow straight through islands and disappear and reappear at random).

Also maybe I'm missing something, is there anyway to fire the carrier missiles as you approach an island rather than spinning the carrier around and reversing to the island.

That doesn't quite work, unless you use the keyboard option to click on space. The arrow icon disappears and then you can take direct control.

Phew I was getting worried that my GP didn't like Castaway.
