Future Drmd Release?

ST and Amiga seemed identical graphically but why did the Amiga seem to have SO much better sound??

I do remember amiga and many of the games for it but never found them as entertaining as genesis games... most of the action games I ever played on it sucked. Lately I've been trying out a lot of ST games on Castaway and really haven't found any good action games that compete with stuff like Sonic, Golden Axe, Streets of Rage and Shinobi... nothing so far has even come close. I have found a couple games for the ST though that are far deeper than anything I've played for genesis... it seems a similiar situation to the current PC/console situation... PC games are usually deeper, harder to get into, whereas most console games are just pick up and play.

The ST(fm) had the same sound ship as the ZX Spectrum 128k (and onwards)... an odd choice but there you go.

Now, the ST(e) had much better sound capabilities and better graphic capabilities (something to do with the blitter I think) and analogue joystick ports. No games ever used them, but they were there nonetheless.

Many games on Amiga were just straight ports of ST games. Like today the practice of developing for the lowest common denominator was done. Just like today many will say the Xbox doesn't really have much better gfx than a PS2. That is because most stuff are just PS2 ports. When the Xbox is used to the fullest it isn't even close.

The Amiga could display over twice as many colors on the screen, had custom chips for animation, and had a pallette of 4096 vs the ST 512. The sound wasn't even close, the ST sounded like a ColecoVision compared to the Amiga. When these features were used the Amiga looked and sounded far better. Unfortunately it wasn't too often.

I think ST had a build-in MIDI-port. Was somewhat popular with synt-musicians, I believe.

Civilization works on Castaway!!!!! :D :D :D :D :D :D

Oh yeh... forgot to mention... the STe had a 4096 colour palette whereas the STfm only had a 512 colours :p

The Amiga definately outshone the ST graphically when people bothered to use the features it had and it pretty much always outshone the ST sonically. What made a BIG difference though was that many more Amiga owners had 1mb machines because it was a doddle to upgrade the memory (the STfm was a pain and quite pricey) so most games on the Amiga took advantage of this.

EDIT - Yeh, where the ST really kicked arse was with it's midi support. As I understand it, not only did it have midi ports but it could also access them without taking much of a processor hit (something about the keyboard and midi having a dedicated chip or something seems to ring a bell). The result was that the ST had much better performance with midi than any Mac or PC of the time and at a fraction of the price. As a result the majority of recording studios had one... at least until hard disk recording became possible.

Does anybody remember Apogee from the DOS days? They made the BEST action games back then, very "pick up and play". Classics, I tell you! :)
It's really too bad that an x86 emulator is apparently not very feasable for the GP32 (if only because most GP32 coders grew up playing on consoles, and not on PCs as I did ;) )

I got a box in my cellar full of amiga stuff.

Non working amiga tho :(

I only bought it for kick off 2

Apogee made the first wolfenstein game didnt they?

I know they made some total shite games with a few gems in between.

Anyway

to the topic......

I know there hasn't been a new Beta since Beta 5. I think he was trying to squash some elusive Cyclone bugs the last I heard. Maybe it is proving difficult to find them. Correct me if I am wrong Reesy :)

I've still been working on the ui, adding the last of the requested features. DrMD is going to have to take a back seat for a few months now though as the company I work for has just become insolvent ( ie the Receivers are in to break up and sell the company ). So I'm out of a job, with no redundancy pay and I'll have to wait 6 weeks for any redundancy money from the goverment instead.

I'm now in frantic "find a job, any job" mode :). I've only been unemployed for half a day and my wife is already making digs ;). So as soon as I've found a job and settled in and continue my work on DrMD.

Later

Why does being an emu devver seem to be cursed? Seriously... seems that every emu devver I've known of always seems to run into hard times, losing their jobs or homes or wives or something along those lines... seems this is why most emulators I've kept up with always stayed in an unfinished state.

Really weird but seriously if you look around you see this does seem to be very common...

Sorry you lost your job Reesy :( I know this one all to well... almost every company I've ever worked for has gone out of business or been sold... that one seems to be MY curse. Well... there's always other jobs out there, and always better paying ones with better hours if you look hard enough :D

Ah, bummer...

Now would be a good time to realise the scheme you figured out a bit earlier, releasing 3 beta's a day, and let... DaveC I think it was, pour in the cash trough donations. :D

Aaaa, would it be possible to release the current (stable?) beta to the general public? I've postponed MD games in anticipation of V2.0, and withdrawal symptoms are killing me... :(

shit that sucks reesy - i know how it is, been out of work plenty of times myself for varying degrees of time (a weekend to a year!!)

just buckle down, do what you gotta do, and get back on your feet - your trusty crew here will be patiently waiting for you till you have got your footing and are ready to return to us!

Good luck man!

You could always donate and get the latest version rather than waiting for the public release?

Hoh, I'd have donated aeons ago, if i had a Paypal account/could create one without credit card.

Although, supposedly bank transfers in EU are relatively easy...

you dont need a credit card for paypal...

Unfortunately, one can not transfer any funds to the account from one's bank account in Finland, atleast a while back, and I do believe I need a credit card to authenticate myself.

Edit: Well, the credit card was for sums greater than 750€, so that's not an issue.
But:

"PayPal does not currently offer the ability to add funds from your bank account. You may, however, use other funding sources to make a PayPal payment, including credit cards and your PayPal account balance."

So I'd need the card, after all...
