I'm planning to make a Fighting Fantasy book using VNS for the GP32. It would work in the same way as the novels, with text, options, battles, stats and equipment. It would also feature graphics for locations and monsters.

So the first game I'm planning to make is the original FF title, Warlock Of Firetop Mountain. I think it would be a good game for long journeys.

What do people think? Would anyone play it, and are there any other titles you think would make good gaming? I'm planning to keep the plot and choices true to the original books.

The idea is to start on a choice tree so I can work out a map of the game, but hopefully I'll be programming in the text, choices and battle sequences within the next week or so.

Ooh, damn, I LOOOOOOVED those books :)

Would be GREAT!

I don't know if fighting with stats is supported in VNS, however.

I wondered if adventure gamebooks were possible using VNS ages ago but didn't have the time to look into it properly, if you can do it then it would be great! If you could convert the Lone Wolf books as well that would be excellent.

cool, that sounds really good. My personal favourite would either me the House of Hell or the Shamutanti hills trilogy. House of Hell would be the best though imo.

Well it would rely as much on graphics as text. Obviously I'd trim down on the text aspect quite a lot, but the important stuff would be there, especially with regards to speech.

Stat fighting is doable (I won't say SUPPORTED as such..) in VNS - just a case of creating a procedure wherein can be stored the SKILL and STAMINA of an opponent, then using random variables to conduct the battle, using the scene as a backdrop to the fight until a choice occurs, triggered by whoevers STAMINA reaches zero first.

I did contact VirtuaLeech to see if he'd be interested in creating a 1.2 version with some small amendments that would make my life easier! I only sent the email this morning but I can get started anyway.

So yeah - glad the response is positive! I thought I'd start with Firetop Mountain because its a) such a seminal game, and B) because its the first one! I spotted Deathtrap Dungeon in a charity shop today - that would make a good game.

My plan is to make the first few, depending on how this one goes! House Of Hell - ooh yes!

PS: Didn't realise that typing b followed by ) would give me sunglasses bloke.

While typing my last entry, two more replies sprung up! Guess the ol' Fighting Fantasy spirit is still going strong! I feel really inspired to do it now - thanks guys!

Shamutanti hills trilogy
I think you're thinking of Steve Jackson's 'Sorcery!

I thought that was Fighting Fantasy also, it uses the same fighting system iirc.

It was essentially the same, but formed a self-contained four part story. I seem to remember it was aimed at a slightly older audience though. It had this great spells system where you weren't allowed to refer to the spellbook at the back - you had to memorise the magic words. Very clever that.

Did anyone ever play the Cretian Chronicles? Now that WAS hard going!

OK - programming has started. So far, title page and instructions with a nice looking scan of that dragon from the booksleeve that used to freak the shit out of me in WH Smiths when I was a tot. If anyone would like me to keep them informed via email, just send me a mail at beat_bedsit@yahoo.co.uk and I'll post you updates as they occur.

Also, if there are any willing beta testers out there...
