Well, here's the story. I was compiling something else when I noticed that it needed FFmpeg. That something else didn't quite work out right, but I was left with FFPlay. So, quick test on the GP2X, and it does actually run with some minor tweaks, albeit unwatchably slowly :p

This is due to the actual video hardware in the GP2X not actually being used at all. Everything is done on the first processor with paeryn's HW accelerated libs. When GPH release their mplayer source, I'll have a go at moving the video decoding over to the 2nd processor. Can't promise anything, though.

It is, however, reasonably good at doing music on its own, and can support all sorts of formats, including WMA and that Playstation audio format. It'll also do video in RealPlayer versions 1.0 and 2.0, and WMV versions 7 and 8.

Basically, anything here will work, except those that require an extra package.

That is great. I'm sure there will be plenty of people interested in the audio playback alone. Having WMA, AAC, and FLAC, among all the others, is important to some people. A front end would be nice if you are willing to pursue it more. Perhaps you could "borrow" the gui from OldPlay if you don't want to code it all yourself.

Also, I would like to see AC3 (Dolby Digital) support in a video player, but I think that would be easier to add to mplayer when the source gets released.
 
Yeah the story is the same with software mplayer, since (surprise) it uses ffmpeg for most of it's decoding. For aac and flac you'll need extra libraries over standard ffmpeg.

wma won't be possible. Itt is only only possible on pcs because linux can use x86 compiled dlls. I don;t think there's anything like that for arm

I didn't do a lot of checking, but in the configuration for ffdshow (direct show filter based on ffmpeg), it has options for wmv1/7 and 2/8 (incomplete) using the libavcodec. I don't think ffdshow was intended for audio playback, so formats like AAC aren't options. Still, if there is support for wmv decoding, I would assume there would be support for wma also.
 
donny662: ffdshow has excelent audio decoding support, it can even reencode and software mix to AC3 (dolby digital) if you want.

WMA version 7 & 8 have been reverse engineered and can be played under Linux without resorting to using windows DLL files and a wrapper. WMA 9 has not been reverse engineered and is not currently possible on non-x86 hardware.

Just confused WMV & WMA -- I know WMV v7-8 work, but I've never tried WMA personally-- however the wikipedia article for ffmpeg seems to think they'll work:

WMA definitely does work, but as it takes extra processing power to decode the thing, it's quite choppy. I need to try some more audio formats. Oh, and if you have display on when playing music, it goes like this:

FFPlay is available for download from the gp2x file archive!

It includes two versions - one with fixed point WMA (fast, but very buggy, and generally sounds quite bad when playing WMA, named ffplay) and one with floating point WMA (slow and choppy, but stable, named ffplay_soft). The one you choose won’t affect anything other than WMA and WMV with audio on. The zip also includes sample scripts for running a movie called video.avi (with and without sound) and for running a music file called music.mp3 (with and without a wave display). MP3s run well at 130MHz. DivX runs fine at 200MHz. RM and RAM run OK at 200MHz. WMA and WMV don’t run all that well, but WMV runs OK without sound at 200MHz.

Credit to soiaf for the fixed-point WMA, and all his work on that, and everything I hope he does in future, and of course credit to the FFMpeg team.

Controls:
Select - Quit
Start - Pause
Left - Backward 10s
Right - Forward 10s
Up - Forward 60s
Down - Backward 60s
Y - Toggle Wave Display
 
I can't wait till we get the source to GPH's hacked up mplayer - hopefully once we have that taking advantage of the video processor will be trivial-ish.

It will take a little longer to come than the kernel source as far as I know. Due to problems with divX I think.

Muncher666, the 2nd core code is a bunch of binary junk at the moment. I'm not even sure if it's sure will be included in the "release" that is supposedly happening soon. The above code is the interface to talk to it, which is as much information as we have right now.

The gp2x has no video processor. It has two processors. Or to cores. the 920 and the 940t. To put it simply the second has less stuff and a smaller cache. See?

The seconds core functions as a hardware MPEG decoder, that's what's being used in mplayer, afaik.

nickspoon, can you help zodttd with his GP2PSX emulator concerning MJPEG playback? IIRC the PSX movies are stored in that format, or some format this player can play.
