so ive got 4 Fujitsu PATA hd's (model # MHV2040AT, please tell me that really is Parallel ATA) how can i go about connecting these things to a pandora to use them as additional hard drives, links to any adapters would be welcome as well

Yes they are ATA drives, also more commonly known as IDE HDD. So to get them working on your Pandora you will need a external HDD case. There are different ones so look at them. They only hold one HDD, so 4 cases x ~10 = ~$50+. You might just want to get a 32GB SD and not worry about the HDD hanging out the back. If the drive was say 150GB then getting one would be better than 4 making 160GB. Hope this answers you question.

You can get multi-hdd enclosures, but it looks like they run really expensive for PATA :/

would this be enough to get pandora or desktop to recognize it? i take it the 2.5 pata drives dont require and power supply as i dont see any way....? or am i missing something, also if someone knows of a case thatll hold 4 of these babies, thatd be nice as well

That won't do the trick, it says that there are no power adapter but that you have to use the power from your pc case.

The power connector on PATA drive are white molex connectors with 12V and 5V looking like the bottom right one :

As said before USB 2.5" disk enclosures cost about 10$, multi disks enclosures are mainly RAID ones and are really large and expensive and they'll need a power socket.

You might want to check these out.

http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=388318 IDE or SATA HDD Docking Hub

http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=48965&C=SO&U=strat15 IDE HDD USB adapter

I use the first for SATA drives attached to a WD HDTV system and laptops etc via USB.

I use the 2nd type (a similar model) to add old PATA IDE drives to a desktop. They provide connectors for SATA/IDE 2.5 or 3.5" drives and the molex/sata connectors with a mains power plug, so the PC/Pandora is not expected to provide the juice and the motherboard/psu connectors aren't needed.

I will test an IDE HDD with the USB adapter type on the Pandora later and let you know if it works with Pandora. The HUB for SATA drives work fine with Pandora, so I think a IDE model will also work.

Edit : The IDE USB adapter (with a power supply block) does work fine on Pandora. Strangely an IDE drive that wouldn't work via that adapter on my windows desktops and laptop, IS working on Pandora, so my wife is chuffed I can reclaim 50gb of her stuff to another ext hdd via a hub. Yay for Pandora B)

that molex power connector is for a 3.5, these 2.5 pata drives have like a weird 2x2 pins next to the pata pins, and i think thats jumpers for master/slave, so i cant figure out if these need any kind of power supply like the 3.5

Yes I wasnt meaning to demean your link DaMummy but this model does include a power supply (as does the similar one I own) and it does work as a solution to the OP question with Pandora. As would the hub types.

ok so then where does the power supply go on these 2.5 pata drives? it doesnt have the plug for molex, remember, TWO-POINT-FIVE, not the desktop 3.5 drives

this is what it looks like, so if you see a place for a molex power supply, please eleborate

Well at this rate of finding a good case for the laptop HDD you might just get a new 250GB usb powered external drive for $50. It would be a good idea to just get a new one than spend $20 on a case for a old 40GB HDD. It would be better than buying 4 cases and end up having spent more and have less space than a $50 250GB.

well at this point i just want a cable thatll convert the drives to usb devices, but people just arent answering the questions....

Judging by images of 3.5" to 2.5" adaptors I found on the web, those four pins set off to the side are the master/slave jumpers as you presumed. Power is probably on the two pins at the other end, but it's hard to be sure from the photos. It also looks like 2.5" drives only take 5V, not the 12V that the molex connector also supplies - and USB delivers 5V. So it's possible that commonly available adaptors are hooking up the 5V from the USB side to the power pins on the HDD interface, but I've not been able to find any that explicitly say that they do this.

Sorry I can't be of more help. I don't own one of these adaptors to test.

so you presume i was right all along? something like this LINK would be able to power the drive as well as read from it?

Could be. Depends on HDD's power drain. USB host gives 500 mA and 700 mA for very short time. If HDD can spin up before it will be disconnected for power overload, then it will work.

EDIT: Powered USB HUB may help with power consumption. Other solution is to wire eternal power source (other battery) to that adapter.

Tricky.

Firstly I offer apologies for not referring to you as the OP.

Secondly for not having checked the model# of the drives and noticing they were 2.5" drives, as you didnt state this in your question.

I did note they weren't WD brand drives however, which is important in that both links I offered support 2.5" drives, with the hub claiming it wont support WD drives only.

Ergo I have helped you answer your own question twice already, though it maybe true that for 2.5" drives, the unpowered USB adapter you had originally linked may also work as you intended, if Levi and Peca are correct. Which I suspect they will be.

You therefore can take a gamble on the un-powered adapter you linked, or rest assured, that the powered one, or the more expensive hub I linked (which also offers a card reader and further usb hub functions which maybe useful) will offer a solution to your question. The molex on the adapter wont be required as the power block supplied is giving enough, if the host USB on Pandora isnt.

Though I too sadly do not have any int 2.5" drives to fully confirm this with, as I opted for an ext 250gb usb port powered hdd as I8NY suggests, to solve the issue of having a ton of stuff available, if on an extended trip.

I will be purchasing the hub, purely for a desktop solution to old IDE 3.5" drives I will use with Pandora once the tv out cables ship and because they offer hot swapping, which may suit your 4 fujitsu drives very nicely. I personally found ext enclosures to be a pain in the ass, to overheat and fail and to be expensive options, if you wish to run a rack of them at once as Exophase stated.

I meant no offense at any point and was not wishing to speak with any hubris.

Kind regards to DaMummy

too many apologizes, this is an internet forum, stick to the asshole ways of them, anyway, ill just buy the thing i linked to, it'll only set me back a few $, and post the results, or at least if they work on desktop since i dont have panda yet, could be of use to other people down the line that have also never held a 2.5 pata drive before

well i cant for the life of me figure this one out, plugging it into usb, hear the drive spinning, but nothing shows up, this is a windows machine for anyone that wants to poke fun at me, and the hd rating is +5V 0.55A for whatever it matters, i dont have any jumpers that fit flush so that i can still use usb adapter if that helps at all, which i doubt. and no i still dont see any way to give it external power

ok so theres a chance my setup could work on pandora? even though its not showing up in windows pc or laptop(w/o external power)
