I've recently been made aware of this & it sounds promising to me.

I'll defer to those here that are infinitely more tech savvy than myself.. is it worth getting excited about & what's the likelihood that it or future iterations could produce capable & upgradable tablets/gaming handhelds etc..?

Well, the form factor itself is self-limiting.  I understand that an Allwinner Engineer is going for a standard here, but WHAT manufacturer would adopt this strategy?  The major computer makers want to move their new and improved merchandise.  Look, the idea is decent....and I've always wanted an upgradeable laptop since my very first one $hit the bed, but NO manufacturer EVER adopts an outside standard.  They want to move units.  This is a worldwide phenomenon since the beginning of time - and unfortunately it works (mostly for the manufacturers/suppliers).  Screw the consumer, they say.

You also have to look at the aging of the accompanying parts though as well.  Computers/laptops/consoles always get better over time, and so do THEIR PARTS.  Slapping a faster card (containing an upgraded SOC may seem like a good thing to you at the moment that you purchase a tablet), but in time that screen won't look so good and other things will have broken down over time...not always, but you'd be amazed how often I find a use to "conveniently" upgrade a personal tech device after exactly 3 years...
