I'm relatively new to emulating and the older systems / programs, and I'm just wondering what the DOS Box does. What is DOS? I read the wikipedia post, and I'm still clueless...

LOL, now I know I'm old. :) DOS is what preceded windows, a bit like unix command line, but without the good stuff. Plenty of good games were published for it between early 80's to about 96.

indeed, DOS was a very-very simple operating system, with only the most neccessary functions
DosBox is an emulator which emulates a complete computer running DOS (that's the reason why it is so slow)

DOS is awesome and I still do much of my file management and networking from a dos prompt. I really miss dos, it's a shame we are stuck with windows. We should be using dos 10 with windows 7 still launching from the dos prompt! That may be getting a bit carried away, but the best thing about dos is it gave you all the power your pc had. Windows runs hundreds of services that most people don't need and is slow as balls. Unfortunately, X (unix, not MAC) is even slower.

X is not an operating system, it's just a graphical display service
if you want command line and a fast operating system with awesome networking/file handling capabilities, try Linux ;)
