How would I get this to fit on a card? Also, the encrypted retail games, I know transferring the folder/file structure doesn't automatically make them boot up, so how is this done then? I did it before, but can't recall.

Hmm, isn't Doom only about 9 MB all in all anyway?
I found it easy to set up just following the tutorial and it worked well with Doom 1 retail, did it about 10 years ago and still play through it on my non lit unit most every summer.
Or do you wish to install a collection of wads to go with it? Are fan-made wads filling up your card? I believe there is no way to do this easily before the GP2X Wiz era...with its super wad select menu system. I only play Doom 1 on GP32 anyway because of the cart limit.

Wasn't there some offline tool for signing?

I never ran retail games myself. Stuff I compiled myself I would be able to just start I think, but it's a long time ago so I could be wrong.

That could be it. I haven't looked too much into what's taking up so much space. I got a USB Key of various GP32 programs and games and saw a Doom folder and it was that much so I assumed that was the total game side. Would make sense if it had custom files included too.

I recently went through the exercise of installing Doom (and Wolfenstein3D and Quake 1 & 2). I became slightly obsessed with id software having learned of their inverse root function and had never played any of these games before because I never had a PC.

I use chocolate-doom and have the following wads:

Bash:
$ ls -Fart -lh /usr/share/games/doom
total 64M
-rw-rw-r-- 1 w w 11M Dec 24 1996 DOOM.WAD
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 28M May 11 2020 freedoom2.wad
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 27M May 11 2020 freedoom1.wad
drwxr-xr-x 8 root root 4.0K Aug 25 21:09 ../
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4.0K Aug 25 21:53 ./

IIRC i got the real wad from archive.org and just put it there manually.

Got it to work. And you were right. The Doom folder I had on this USB key had a bunch of different Doom wads grouped together, so I opted for Doom and Doom 1 wads (around 15mb) and it looks and plays great.

Since I don't want to make too many new topics, had a brief scare. My unit just powered off while playing Blue Angelo (William run). But the batteries died, so I'm charging them. Having BLU units, they sure don't warn you of a low battery LOL.

But in the William character run, I am one Star power stone away from having the full set, to unlock the Red Angelo character after that.

And then when I look at this old thread, it says you have to collect them with the first character, C311. Sooo what happens if you collect them with William? lol

William character progress...

And on another note, the game must be checking prior saves if I was able to start William run with all the powers and colored stones already unlocked. Plus, the rainbow barriers were already unlocked, despite getting the rainbow gem late on my first C331 run and not going back to unlock those doors prior to beating the end boss...

Games like this, I wish there was more documentation....

I'm not a fan of most emulation devices, but I do like the GP32 and pandora / pyra of course, which seem more open.

The South Korean president about 25 years ago - desperate for his country to appear modern - stated that he wished Korea would produce a product like the GameBoy. They didn't really. It seems South Korea doesn't have critical mass to accommodate a console? Only two countries that I am aware of produce original consoles - including handhelds - these days. There are more countries with space programs, automotive industries, nuclear programs... go figure.

Now, I'm confused. Went back to the Elf Village, and the dialog didn't change (with William character). I have all the 5 star powers...

So there's this crystalized Dragon-like statue in the Hells Castle, map shown. Doesn't do anything when I try to talk or attack it. Maybe this was something that only triggered with the first character C-331?

I went ahead and beat the game with William. Not like there's much of a story, but with the second character, most of the dialog is stripped out. No Elf dialog for the bridge taken out before going into Hells Castle, no dialog in the Elf Village (that is different from C-331 character). As soon as you defeat the end boss, "Game Over" and then credits roll. lol

C-331 stats ended up being 82.2%, Lv 34, 6 hours, 24 minutes.
William stats ended up being 89%, Lv 61, 3 hours, 10 minutes.

Edit: Tried making a new character (last save slot 3) for name, "REDANGEL" but it appears like it didn't trigger the new unlock, soooooo there must be a NPC prompt that I am not finding somewhere in the game world..but then...according to this thread: https://pyra-handheld.com/boards/threads/4th-character-in-blue-angelo.16610/

You can only do it with the first character C-331. Yikes. Well, I don't think i'm going to bother going back and searching for the 5 star powers with that character (only got 2 out of 5). I guess the game treats the William character as just a play run, with no real consequence on the story or any gameplay unlocks. Shame.
