I was being lazy and not stopping the USB card reader when I wanted to remove the SD card. I just pulled it out of the reader. I was fine up until tonight when the whole thing corrupted and needed a reformat.

Lucky I had made a backup.

Thought I'd share this as a word to the wise, always stop your USB reader before removing your SD card.

I (almost) never stop it before I remove it from the reader.
I wait 'till it is finished writing, wait about 5 seconds and take it out.
I have done this at least a year and haven't had a corruption on any card so far. Maybe I'm just lucky.

I think its only a problem if write caching is enabled. Most Usb card reader drivers automatically switch it off - in my limited experience. It would seem some don't or through a series of unfortunate events it was enabled.

Personally, I usually 'eject' the Sd card - subtly different from safely removing the device. You just right click on the drive and eject. That way I get extra 'peace of mind' and don't have to go through the whole unplugging mylarky.

But yeah, its very easy to corrupt a card really. And don't anybody go skydiving either...
