Did You Get Your Retail Wiz? Post About It Here!

Well I got SuperPang and Puckman and MAME all configured and set up last night, and played around a bit .. I really love the new OLED screen, it sure does make games very vibrant, but .. to be honest .. I'm a bit 'meh' about the Wiz now. I dunno, I really wish we had some games that *REALLY* pushed the metal hard and gave us something interesting. I guess I have to dig deeper into the Emu side of things to find some games that keep me occupied .. until then, Juno6 and Scrambler and Crazy Climber are all pretty fun ..

I got my Wiz yesterday. By the time I got home I got around 2 hours to play with it (this includes adding emus and roms.) I installed MAME and SCUMMVM. Both great. I couldn't figure out how to get out of a game running in MAME without restarting the system. I tried pushing the VOL controls both at the same time, didn't work. I'll have to research that. I got some games like Monkey Island 1 running in SCUMMVM. Didn't have sound but looks great! Hopefully over the next couple days I'll get a chance to play with it more and figure out if I am not doing something right for both emus. I'll be trying out the Amiga one soon.

I am actually very anxious to develop for it (one of the primary reasons for purchasing it.) I will be writing a overhead 2D game for it at first and then probably and FPS construction kit for it after. I hope to start on developing next week.

to get out of a game on MAME press both shoulder buttons and start at the same time.

Just a quick question. What firmware is coming on the newly delivered Wizs. is it Firmware 1.0.0 or 1.1.0?

The most stuff is running well. GpSP crashes somtimes but notaz fixed that in the newest release. GPquake is the only program that stops running I know of. But you can use Tyr Quake for that.
There're problems with the display timing and refresh rate but notaz find a solution for it.
Some people seem to have problems with rhe touchscreen since 1.1.0 but I can't confim this.
The boot time is longer with 1.1.0.

yeah touchscreen is all over the place. Having to recalibrate on every startup as it's either out to the top left or bottom right.

I'm actually not that interested in the touch screen since I'm mainly gonna use it for running emulators.

Got my Wiz today from gp2xstore -- ordered it early Thursday afternoon, and here it is! They shipped it out a few hours after I ordered it, and I chose Priority Mail (total cost was $189).

I'm really digging it so far. The screen is gorgeous (found myself quite a few times turning it in every direction I could, amazed that there's NO bad viewing angle!). The controls are great (MUCH better than the 4 separate directional buttons on the F-200). I've been rocking PocketSNES and PicoDrive (with the tearing fix) all day, and am thoroughly enjoying both. In most cases, both are running great with no noticeable slowdown on the default settings (with the exception of a few SNES games with special chips -- Yoshi's Island, for instance). In terms of screen tearing, the single diagonal line crossing my screen during gameplay isn't a dealbreaker. In fact, everything's running so well, and looks so good, that I find myself not noticing the line after playing for awhile. Now, I'll just sit here patiently and wait till the coding gods port GnGeo over. :)

It came with FW 1.1.0 preloaded, and everything seems to be running as it should. The boot time is a little on the long side, but hey, I've been a GP2X fan since the F-100 days, so I'm used to that kinda thing by now. :) The touchscreen was properly calibrated right out of the box, and the accuracy in games like Boomshine and Animatch is great (and this stylus is light years better than the collapsible "car antenna" stylus that came with the F-200). I love the battery pack -- after years of having to swap out rechargeable AA's every few hours, it's a blessing. Being able to charge *and* add/manage files over USB is a very welcome improvement as well.

The touch screen would help with mouse support on emulators.
You can use the directional buttons but it's not a great solution.

While I was checking out the Wiz listing at ThinkGeek, I saw this:

Anyone know more about this system? Who is the manufacturer? Is there an online manual?

Thanks in advance.

You can watch this video where craig compares both, wiz and a320...Some say its a little biased however you get the point. At the momment
theres some community support for the A320 and linux has been released.

For the comparison:

I finally got my Wiz today. Had to travel a "bit" (wasted 2 hours) to some customs office and pay 25€ extra there. That was annoying for 3 reasons: a) 25€, b) 2 f-ing hours(!), and c) I got ANOTHER F-ING CUSTOMS OFFICE right across the street. Literally. Across the street.

Oh well... but I got my Wiz now. :)

Ordered from ThinkGeek and got my Wiz a couple days ago. Was totally lost the first day or two, just testing the system, getting software, figuring out where everything goes. Not exactly well documented, and got a little lost under all the possible emulators and games and on and on.

Thankfully, the README files in all the EMUs make things easier, if not downright idiot-proof. Aside from wishing I could get the IPS patch for the J-only release of Shin Megami Tensei up and running on PocketSNES, and not-quite-yet finding reliable video encoding settings on my Mac, I'm quite enjoying it. =)

unfortunately as my luck goes I recieved a somewhat defective unit, it won't read in windows once connected with the USB cable but chages with it just fine, even says USB connected the second it gets connected, just won't show up in windows.

That sounds to me like the default drive letter is clashing with another device on your system. Go into Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Computer Management then click on disk management. Hopefully you should see your Wiz listed amongst all the other devices. Right-click it and select 'change drive letter and paths' and you select a drive letter that's not being used by another device.

Hopefully that should solve the problem.

I ordered my Wiz almost 2 weeks ago from GBAX but they still don't have any in stock. Meanwhile the Pandora is still "Two Months Away". And most of my electronic gadgets have been stolen. Getting rather frustrated now. :-|
