Any way to increase this via some terminal shenanigans or other such hackery, nothing too drastic required i just find quite a few of the emulators difficult to hear even at maximum volume.. going a little mutton in my dotage

Cheers.

in the menu: multimedia -> mixer

Thanks,

The master volume is already at maximum, the input boost was at minimum (didn't think this was supposed to make a difference, but changed it to maximum anyway and it hasn't)

Anything else i can try..?

I don't think there is something you can do in software, maybe use headphones? I don't think the volume is too low...

Also there might be a way to raise the volume in the specific app you are using.

Im sure the volume is more than adequate for most, unfortunately i am a little hard of hearing & in quite a few things (Rearmed, Scumm, Snes, etc) i struggle to hear properly (already tried some pretty decent headphones & they make hardly any difference)

Hopefully someone here knows of a (ideally not too convoluted) hack to raise default volume levels, or a way to set levels for different apps/emulators.

Thanks anyway.

you can raise the volume, but it will sound bad due to the speaker limitations and software amplification.

in your home directory. edit .asoundrc

add

"

min_dB -5.0

max_db 50.0

resolution 6

"

at the end of pcm.softvol

so it look like

pcm.softvol {

...

...

...

control {

..

..

}

min_dB -5.0

max_db 50.0

resolution 6

}

then in the alsa mixer, ajust the volume so that its loud enough for you when your volumn wheel is maxed (to have as little software amplification as needed).

Well, was not suggesting this, because it may actually harm your speakers or ears as it will distort a lot if you put it higher as the amplifier can handle...

Edit: If the Pandora with headphones is not loud enough for you... Do you hear anything, that an ipod outputs? Just out of interest ;)

Can you tell me where exactly in the home directory .asoundrc is please

Under home i have: My Name> Applications> Cache, Data & Settings (looked in all these & can't find it)

Thanks

^ You just need to be in your home directory (the one with your username), and allow hidden files to be shown by pressing CTRL and H. Any time you see a filename from a Linux or Unix system listed that has a dot at the start, that means it's hidden from normal view.

Since it's in your home directory, it belongs to you, so you shouldn't need to enter any passwords in order to edit it.

OK added the lines as instructed and everything is now completely screwed up.. NO multimedia apps work, either won't load at all or just go completely haywire (bizarrely all game/emulator sound is fine) no controls at all in mixer (or options to select in control) can't access file manager to undo this carcrash, what to do please..?

open a terminal, then you can use "mousepad .asoundrc" to reopen the editor.

to me it sound like you made either a typo or some invalid character slipped in your .asoundrc

oh. if for whatever weird reason mousepad wont work, you can use nano .asoundrc or vim .asoundrc (ill hate myself for saying this, but i would recommend you use nano, since vim is not what you would call, a regular editor heh).

heres a copy of my .asoundrc for reference.

oh and my volume is set to about 15% in the mixer. although depending on the case, sometimes ill bring it up to 20-25%. but dont put it to the max or well, it wont sound cool at all !

Many thanks,

Don't think i am cut out for this kind of tweaking, most of my attempts result in unmitigated disasters, thank christ for this forum and all the good (and more importantly patient) samaritans here.

Just to be sure, you are aware that there is a physical volume dial on the Pandora?

Nice tip from Jey123456 (thanks for that) and I thought I'd add that in Gnome MPlayer you can also alter the volume gain under the preferences (ctrl+P) under the Mplayer tab, tick the 'Mplayer software volume control Enable' box and then add a low value to the 'Volume Gain' box about 10-15. Too much and things distort.

This only boosts sound in movies obviously but I think it should also affect PanPlayer aswell.

Hei, old thread, sorry, but adding these lines does not work for me.

min_dB -5.0

max_db 50.0

resolution 6

I even tried Jey123456s asoundrc file for the case of misspelling -> no change. rebooting -> no change.

MarioPandios tip works gread. actually increasing the volume for some videos is enough and makes sense in some cases,

but giving some extra amplification also to other programs would be nice.

Has anything changed since these posts? Im using kernel 3.2 and beta 4 of super Zaxxon

to be more constructive, I finaly noticed that the software amplification for Audacious, MPlayer and so on are regulated seperatly. They don`t care about .asoundrc.
