MN is a massive welfare state. People constantly deny that people don't exploit the system but we have a family friend whose daughter racks in about 150,000$ a year in welfare, and this is very common. There are people who do require help, but the fifth generation welfare family doesn't. Will it serve the politicians best interests to cut off an easy way to power? No. When government and economics mix its always for the benefit of the government at the expense of the people. Even though they think they're having it great getting free things, what's going to happen when it ends? These people are obviously reliant on the government for everything.
People scoff at privatization of services but when the government is the only option, at least in st.paul/minneapolis, the quality goes way down. The water example from earlier is a perfect one, as the cost went up in the cities the quality went down. We saw more rust and other elements present in the water, and some creepy neon orange specs after filtering the water.(turns out that was coming from when GE dumped chemicals into the como park area during the 1940's which was revealed a few years ago was contaminating the water supply. Once again swept under the rug as soon as it appeared.)
Our public education is a joke here. They only teach really what the party wants. Maths aren't a focus, and the schools focus more on getting kids on drugs then actually giving them an education. Every student brings in about 20k a year. if the student is placed on some form of drug the state funding for said student goes up from 20 to 25k or even 30k if they're disabled then federal funding comes into play. And if they're both disabled and are on drugs the income stacks. So while other programs are being cut to bring in more special ed programs.. teachers wages go up, school based activities go down. (Field trips, sports, clubs, vocational classes, music classes,) They also pushed a lot political stuff as well on us. They tell us about certain things in every class. When I was in school it was the light rail and how it was great for the state and us. Or bringing in more immigrants and how its great for jobs.. (when five of us in the class were living in families who were unemployed and couldn't get any help. Nothing beats living off credit cards for 8 months because your income before the lay offs was so high you don't qualify for any help.) or the racial tension stuff. They loved stirring that pot with the race card.
They also got into economics focusing mainly on how big government will help us. Its funny how they don't focus on writing, spelling, multiplication tables, but intercity busing and poor illegal immigrants and how we need to fund them is a top priority.
My favourite was the healthcare bill. 2008 that was pushed onto us hardcore. How its the greatest thing since sliced bread be sure to tell your parents to vote for it. Only use these news sources, etc, etc. Ask any questions or pose any opposition and you nearly fail the class. Use outside sources (I personally liked to use British sources because they don't care about our joke of a political system. Teachers however weren't amused. They never liked me neutralizing political biases.)
Highschool was all about tests and colleges, and how you had to be A,B,C to get funding. Classes became less about knowledge and more about how to pass tests to get funding for the school. I was actually escorted out of a class and told to me face "It doesn't matter none of this applies to you." as they were talking about scholarships and such. Yes I'm white and they told me to my face "It doesn't matter you won't amount to nothing."
I don't care for socialism. I don't care for our leaders, our economy and our flawed system of a government. Our politicians make it quite obvious we don't matter, and considering how many members of the same families keep on getting into power, it might as well be considered a nobility.
So if I could vote out these maniacs. I would in a heart beat, but when its the same freaking club since the 1970's in power with the same agenda since then there's no real way to. Not when you have people who are basically brain washed into voting democrat no matter what the candidates says. Nothing says ironic like a quail hunter who hates black people, smokes a pipe, and always voted democrat because his family raised him to and any other party was the enemy. Brain washed to a T.
