Buy a PSP if you want the happy trendy plastic spoonfed robot lifestyle.

Buy a GP2X if you want to be part of something better (but don't mind being rejected by most of society).

I have a PSP and a GP2x, and to be honest I'm loving the GP2x scene, the people, the 'wait' for new things, the re-playing old favs. Its great.

My PSP is collectng the house dust as i wait for something that I must buy for it, unlike the bulk of the dross, and far to complicated games for a hand held machine.

The best test - I offered the PSP or the Gp2x to my 9 year old, what did she go for ?

Gp2x and Columns running on the Megadrive emulator, followed by Sonic. Kept her most happy until the batteries ran out ! (lol) and more rechargables where loaded.

Got mine for Lik-sang.
Gp2x, case, tv-out lead, power supply, 1gb card - cost £180 if i remember right, plus £32 import tax. Plus £20 in Argos for some rechange ables.

More than worth in in IMHO.

Not stopped playing with it yet and its great pulling it out on the train next to PSP fan boy !

:D

What do you mean ... "rejected by society" ?

So far I've only had positive response from my workmates, I was surprised how many actually remembered the good old sega classics, even a PSP owner enjoyed the GP2X and did not try to flame it ... :)

... it's strange, for some reason comparing the PSP with the '2X seems to me like comparing balloons with pizza.

"SunSpire"
i guess people compare the two because the psp has a good homebrew scene, but thats only compatiple with the 1.5 firmware, also thier compared because thier both new handhelds (kinda like the gp32's constant comparison with the gba) both have nothing in common but are just compared for the heck of it (imo both are great, but are both to different handhelds targeted for 2 different audiences, and do different things, just like ballons and pizza (but the gp2x is the pizza cuz pizza RULES!!))

EDIT: oh yeah the psp giga pack may be 300 but from gp32z.com i can get the gp2x, a case, 1gig sd card, a power supply, and a wrist strap for 315 (not including shipping) then with the psp (as mentioned) you need to buy $40 games, un like the gp2x, where every game and app is free!!

As other people pointed out, you actually can now play homebrew on the PSP with firmware up to 2.6, you just have to have a copy of the game GTA:Stories in order to do it. Factor that in if you're going to be buying a new one. :)

Even then, it doesn't run *all* homebrew.

I want no part of a system that requires me to perform trickery and slight-of hand to get emulators to run ;) (I'm having a difficult enough of a time getting my scripts to work)

I currently own a PSP and I recently bought a GP2X from a member here that should be shipping soon. I never planned on using the PSP with emus but once I tried it out it was actually fun to play the old school stuff on the go. one problem was that I like MAME more than anything else and it never really ran on the PSP.

another downside was that once word broke out about emus on it Sony started locking up the games so units needed upgrades in order to play them. sure there were workarounds but it was just too tedious in my opinion.

I owned 5 of the original release games and that was it. I started to think about the fact of paying 250.00 for a system in which I only had 5 games to play. I did have an NES emu that had a few games but not many. I was completely out the video game stage during the SNES so I never checked that out.

once I heard about the GP2X I immediately began looking at what games I could play on it. I was sold on it instantly. I have since upgraded my PSP and purchased those new games I have wanted and will not look back for emus on it. as soon as my GP2X shows up I'll have my ultimate gaming experience. oldschool on a system made for it and current stuff on a system made for that as well.

now I don't regret buying my PSP as I still enjoy playing the games I own on it but I feel the GP2X will end up getting much more use. I'll give another opinion after I recieve my GP2X.

To be honest the PSP's snes, genesis [ I think?], and nes emus are alot better than the gp2xs one at the moment.

gp2x's nes is weak and no1 wants to work on it. Allthough we do have the hot neogeo, and psx[owns the psp psx emu ^^] being saught after which makes the gp2x neat. Also our homebrew is currently better.

I suspect our Genesis emulation is better than theirs actually for now, simply because we've got Cyclone, and, as far as I know, there's not a MIPS equivalent. Which means they'll be using one of the inevitably slower accurate cores instead. Snes and Nes certainly beat ours, though.

I have a v1.00 Japanese PSP and now a GP2X as well. I was initially attracted to the PSP by the promise of some homebrew and emulation, but knew it would be a struggle and it was a bit underwhelming. Now I'm locked out of new games so the GP2X will allow me to upgrade the PSP and use it as a commercial games machine to play GTA etc, while I can now use the GP2X for Amiga emulation and loads more on the go. I often take one or the other on the tube for my daily commute and so they both get even use really.

The cost thing worried me a bit too, as there are extra costs associated with the GP2X, in addition to the unit I bought a case, a 1Gb SD card, a Card reader for my Mac, a mains charger, new higher powered batteries and a charger for them, as well as a DaveC Joystick cap, so it has really added up! The bonus is of course that I don't need to pay anything for games at the moment. With the PSP, all I ever bought was a 1Gb Memory Stick and a stick on screen protector, (I got my PSP for a bargain price in Japan) but the games are at least £20 a go...

For people who have the available cash, then both systems earn their place in your collection, they don't necessarily mutually exclude each other. If you are limited on expediture, then it's a case of deciding what your priorities are and you don't need other people on a forum to tell you that, you just need to go and sit down for 5 minutes to think about it. There's no rush either, in time you could have both, just not straight away.

Hope this helps!

If sony wasnt fkin around with the firmware, i would have got a psp (I like to be able to play both commercial games and homebrew).
Now im buying a gp2x :).

I too have both, and my psp is also gathering dust. I just love the gp2x thing and scene. Love mine!

Yeah, balloons are obviously inferier to pizza. :p

But seriously, I've had much more fun with my GP2X than I expect I would have had with a PSP. Mine has so far cost £155 (Unit £125 + Rechargeables £15 + "256mb" SD card £15)
