If you want to change wireless mode (the default is managed) you can do this from the terminal:
First, some apps can manage wireless. You can kill them:
	
	
	
		
	
	
	
		
Another Apps using network are avahi-daemon and wpa-supplicant.
NetworkManager puts networking up. Once killed you can do for example:
	
	
	
		
You can do iwconfig without parameters to ensure if the interface is running the selecte mode:
