Centipede 1/6 Replica Kickstarter

Thanks for the pics! Is that fire button in the right place? It looks to be misaligned with the artwork, but maybe that's how it was originally.

Yeah, I thought the same thing when I first looked at it, so I had to look up some clips to check. Actually, the fire button doesn't go in the center of those lines as you would think in the butt of the centipede, but above it higher closer to the screen. I'm guessing on the coin-op, that gives a larger area to rest ones arm, as to not get tired using the fire button. Since this is rather small in general, they seemed to lower the button slightly to probably make it easier to use in this current mini form. The bezel art is placed different as well, as it's at the base of the screen in the arcade, and they ran it along both sides here to save on screen space.

@Jumpman Have you had an issue with the battery? Sounds concerning if it's draining constantly while not plugged in. Doesn't sound good for the battery...

Yeah, I was never going to have this problem, as I never planned to play this that much. LOL

Mine is already back in the box, and waiting to be displayed at a later date. I do plan to watch the findings in regards to the battery issue, so if need be, I can take the necessary steps to fix it. I'll probably wait a week, and take mine out and check, as the battery should either be empty, or still near full, and then I'll know if I have a problem or not?

Chris

Alrighty, after 1 week of sitting in it's box, I fired it up this morning and while the battery indicator showed it was "low", it came on and worked fine. So I guess my unit is OK, as the issue seems to be charges aren't being held in the units with the issues. So if I charge it right now, and unplug it, by tomorrow, it will have no power, or something along those lines. So for my unit, the battery will probably be empty in the 1-2 week range, as it doesn't seem to be a powerful or long term battery, but since this is mostly for display, with light use, that's about what I expected in regards to battery performance.

It does seem to be a pretty wide spread issue, and while they have addressed the problem, no fix or work around has been mentioned. Plenty of international buyers are now getting their's, and if a recall is required, this may be a HUGE problem for a company just getting started. Of course they plan to fix the issue before Tempest goes in to production, so they may end up having to just offer up a better deal on that unit to make up for Centipede, but who knows?

So for anyone wanting to get one of these currently, you may want to wait until they announce what can or may be done in regards to this battery issue. It can be plugged in and played just fine, so if showing it off on occasion is your deal(like me), this issue isn't a deal breaker. But for the full asking price of retail, I'm sure most would want a 100% perfect working unit, so please note the issues at hand. I still love this damn thing, and even if mine had the issue, I would try my best to work with New Wave to reach a proper conclusion where both sides could be happy(without them going out of business of course). LOL It's funny how they spent so much time making the trackball worked right, and missed basic quality control 101 in regards to the battery. Oh well, live and learn I guess?

Chris

If it's a rechargeable lithium battery, going below flat will kill it, so a 1-2 week battery life when not in use could be a big problem. The Gamebuino Classic destroys batteries if left for a few months without charging, and that's bad enough.

Thanks for that info, as I was not aware of that potential problem. Like I said, I'm keeping an eye on how this develops, so if the battery is going to become "dead" in due time, I'll for sure have to see what my options will be for a fix. I'll report back once they make a new update?

Chris

Well, New Wave gave their latest update yesterday, and they are currently planning a patch that can be applied by USB, and it should be good after that(or so they say).

So until next time.

@Jumpman just a couple of quick questions if I may... I received mine just yesterday!

Does yours make a sound when you press the left coin eject button? The review they shared indicated that it should make a coin drop sound. Mine is silent.

Does your unit have a slight wobble?

Other than that (and the battery) issue, I'm well impressed with the unit. It's actually pretty damned playable too! :)

Sorry for my late reply, but I can get busy sometimes and not visit the forums for weeks, and I just noticed your question when I stopped by again.

Yeah, when just hitting the left coin door button, it doesn't make a sound. I could have sworn I saw a video where someone dropped the little mini coins in the slot, so if that is possible, it may make the sound then? If the sound is not there, but once was, I don't know why they would change that, as it's just another level of detail that speaks to the overall authenticity of the device. Seems a missed opportunity if it was removed for whatever reason.

As for a wobble, none here, and I would assume if yours does, one of the 4 rubber feet might be out of whack. There should be 4, one at each corner underneath, so if one got slightly flattened during shipping, it may now be causing the wobble. All of mine are perfect, and the machine sits perfectly still while in use, or on display.

No worries - thanks for replying :) Actually I sent them an email about the sound. This was their response (received the day before yesterday):

You pay very high attention to details. You are the only person that noticed that we added and removed this. At first we thought that it would be cool to add the noise so you get that feeling of adding quarter that we all remember from the arcade. But after some user testing people who remembered the old Atari games remember that Centipede didn't do this. When you added quarters it added credits silently. To be as authentic to the original as possible, we removed this sound.

I'll check the feet again, but they looked fine. Actually their review video it also looked like it had a slight wobble. In any case, it's not anything that causes any kind of problem anyway, so I don't mind that at all.

Yeah, I had found the video clip earlier today that played the sound, and it was from 8 months back. So that was an old prototype for sure, as they made tons of changes from that look to what became the final. I honestly didn't like that "coin" sound at all, as it wasn't a "credit" noise that's often used to indicate a credit. It was an actual sound of a coin dropping, and it was beyond an artificial sound, so I'm glad they opted to remove that, and I'm glad to see that any games that have an actual "credit" sound, should get it with future offerings(so long as it had it originally).

I got a firmware kit that's supposed to fix the battery issue. Haven't tried it yet (their firmware app is Windows, ugh)...

However, on other news I pre-ordered their new arcade, Super Street Fighter II - never was any good at it, but also spent quite a bit of time playing the original...

https://newwavetoys.com/products/street-fighter-2-x-replicade

Yeah, I preordered, as I like these units and want to show support. I don't see SF being all that playable, but we'll see. I did recently get my Tempest, and it's good quality in regards to look and feel of the cabinet and art, etc. Sadly, the spinner doesn't work as it was originally intended, but for what it is, I think it works OK. Centipede actually exceeded my expectations, and Tempest just met them, but these for me are mostly art pieces, that I don't plan to play all out on.

Dragons Lair and Asteroids are up next, as well as a cool USB hub in the style of the old arcade token/quarter machines. I did do the Centipede update, but haven't tested it after the fact to see how well it holds the charge now, but it was a pain in the ass to do. I'm used to changing out system cases and the like, and I used to modify system with soldering, so I'm no rookie in basic tech stuff. But the cable you need to remove, is glued in, and the video shows to yank it out, which didn't sit well with me. So I ended up using a sharp razor blade and removed the glue, then removed the cable, as I just didn't see the recommended way working out as planned. LOL

I also recently got my Numskull 1/4 scale Pac-Man, and this thing rocks. Really cool overall shape, size and quality with my only issue being they set the lives to 5, so in case someone wants to go for a perfect score, which is insane to say the least. They should have included an option to adjust the extra player count, but they are planning a FW update, but no telling if it will happen or not. Many buyers had issues with this, so that's why their looking in to a fix, but it should have been set to 3 players by default, with an option for more as that's more accurate than the 5 player setting. Otherwise it's amazing, and I can't wait for their other units(Galaxian, Ms. Pac-Man & Galaga).

The Super Streetfighter II mini arcade arrived today, and it's even slicker than Centipede. The controls are surprisingly good, honestly they are like miniature versions of the originals and very tactile :)

Yeah, mine showed up yesterday, but I haven't had the chance to try it yet, but looking forward to it when i get some free time.

Hmmm, all I can see on that page is that it's 12" tall. Is there anywhere else where it shows the other dimensions?

What other dimensions do you really need, are you limited in the area you can place this? LOL Yeah, it's 1/6 scale, so I guess you could probably take the full arcade cab dimensions and do some math and you would probably be close, but to what end I guess is the question? I'm sure if you message New Wave they can give you the exact dimensions of whatever you may need. Sorry, I had already put mine away when I realized you needed more than what was shown on the details page.

Well, I just tried mine out, and I have to agree with ClockworkCoder, as the controls are way better than I thought they would ever be. They are using micro switches for sure, and it shows, as the controls are spot on, just way small. It's not ideal, but I could see having some decent match ups on this thing. It also has to USB ports, so other joysticks or gamepads can be used as well(didn't try that feature yet). Having now used this, they really should have come up with something better in regards to the rotary dial of the Tempest, as that unit is the only one that seems to have missed the mark on controls. Which is a shame, as the controls is what makes Tempest, Tempest.

They also added some better protection inside the shipping box, as to allow for space within the shipping box, to provide extra protection to the actual unit box. The cab also is more weighted than the past games, and I can assume that's for stability while having knock down drag out matches. You can see where this unit is probably the best so far, as it seems to show a level progression since the first of better build quality. While I still like the 1/4 scale of Numskulls offerings best, as I think 1/4 allows for a finer level of detail overall, these New Wave cabs are damn nice in their own right and for the difference in cost, is a fair trade off for what you get. Both are amazing, and really are true to there arcade originals, it just comes down to funds, space and which size is more preferred.
