Pandora Camera On The Pandora - Why Not?

Quick and Dirty MSPaint ('d ps a camera onto the Pandora, but can't find a shot of the back of it):

(large picture that doesn't need to be placed in a quote pyramid)
Um, yeah, the surface of the LCD would be on the other side of the lid to a camera plugged into the USB socket. Depending on the orientation of the plug on the camera you'd either get a picture of the back of the lid or a picture of the floor.

He said that the orientation of the plug would have it rotated away from the LCD. And if you make sure the Pandora is at a 90-degree angle or so to the floor, you wouldn't be photographing the floor.

Oh, beg your pardon. I thought he meant for taking screenshots. That would work then.

Correct, I meant for taking shots of the world, as that's what I assumed they wanted it for. Please give the benifit of the doubt, I know we have some dumb arses, but to assume I meant what you thought, you'd have to assume I had an 80 IQ...

Yes, I was also thinking it would have real time display on the screen. I also noticed that the dongle had ~15-20 degres of tilt built into the lens structure, so you could get some upward tilt out of it and have your LCD somewhat less than 'flat'.

(Also, why would anyone want to take a picture of the LCD, a screen grab would be much better quality? This is an odd thing to think I was talking about. At that range, you'd never get a full picture or possibly in focus. I'm also sure the camera wouldn't be center to the LCD on the vertical plane natively.)

Sorry! No such implication was intended! I'd genuinely misunderstood what you were trying to do.

Thnx Firefox, I was actually just giving the others a solution that didn't require a physical mod to the Pandora to accomplish what they wanted.

I must apologize to all in one respect: My analysis of the orientation of the USB plug on the top of the Pandora might be flawed. After further analysis, I think it is orientated wrongly for that particular camera. One of the creators of the Pandora, or anyone who has a dev unit could confirm one way or the other, but I think the current USB connection and the camera in question would infact point the camera at the back of the screen.

I think the solid plastic part in the Pandora USB connector might actually be black, hence why I couldn't see it on the pics.

Further use of google images on similar PCB connectors have shown I'm probably wrong with regards to orientation. Having the plastic peice be far from the PBC (not close to it) doesn't make sense to me, but that seems to be the norm.

So, there are two options (if I did indeed analyze incorrectly):

1. Use a different USB camera fob (I'm sure more will come out).
2. Use one of the USB extenders that allow rotation (of which I have presented a few) with the existing known fob.

Honestly, I'm sure there will be a camera that points the right direction at some (soonish) point.

Truly, I was just trying to help them simplify their idea (it seemed like it was going down an unnecessary tangent), I don't personally feel the need to have my (Future) Pandora to have such a cam.

Cheers,

BackAss.

Bump I guess.

On further review of the pic, I realized that I was imagining the board in the device in the opposite orientation of what it really is (upside down). With the standard USB slots out there and the correct orientation of the board, the existing camera would indeed point the right way. Of course, this is all academic as I have not handled the board.

Can someone with an actual board confirm on which side the USB port has the plastic nub, towards the keyboard or towards the base? I know it's not of much value for you to take the time to post, but then, it's not much effort to confirm either.

Cheers and thanks,

BackAssward.

The black plastic in the connector is closer to the bottom of the Pandora. It's upside down since the connectors are all on the bottom of the PCB.

Is it possible to use a camera on an IM client? Would be a huge plus for me
Providing software was made to make use of the feature, I don't see any reason why not.

Interesting... I have no question the Pandora is powerful enough. All there needs to be is software.

Currently webcam support for MSN, Yahoo, and AIM for any instant messaging software available to Linux is a work-in-progress. You'll have to use some other separate software to get webcam working.

Google Chat supports webcams, and interfaces with AIM. I run it on my N800.

That Gtalk webcam thing is n800 specific. Its not integrated into the windows messenger thingy, nor is it on the web based gtalk thingy.

oops, my bad. I think there is experimental webcam support in gchat foor pc.
Really? Could you find a link for that, as I have been looking for something like that.

Looked it up again, someone found some gtalk function calls that had nothing to do woth anything, and with the new support for live preview while taking a profile picture, upcoming webcam support is likely. Right now, there is a third party plugin: www.trap17.com/index.php/festoon-google-talk_t29740.html
Hope that helps.
