Good job doing nothing but insulting me.

says the guy who jumped into this thread AFTER the problem had been solved to insult the original poster. Fucking hypocrite.
I didn't know the definition of hypocrite was telling someone how not to have their system consantly fuck-over <_< and it wasn't it insult, it was a fact coupled with help. For your system to screw over that badly, you or someone using the computer is doing something drastically wrong. Thanks though.

EDIT: Had to fix your messed up quotes...

However at Linux has had this "very real threat" for years and years, at least as far back as 1999 or so (and probably since its creation)... and nothing of note has happened.
Yes, but you know exactly why this is the case - relatively low desktop userbase and a higher intelligence/security awareness in its users.

And just to note, about Linux not being a target? I think almost a third of all servers in the U.S alone would be a pretty big target....
Server users don't go to porn sites, download files from MSN chats or open up dodgy email attachments

I'm sorry what do you do for a living? If you tell me you are an IT security consultant I might listen to you until then I'll ignore you for the arrogant fool that you are.

How in the hell does what I do change the fact that I'm right? That's prejudice, plain and simple; a characteristic I would not be proud of (but one you're no doubt comfortable with  ).

I like how you have no technical expertise to offer, just random blatherings. Not very professional of someone who supposedly has 20+ years in "the business". It's not very professional to be intellectually beaten by someone who's probably 1/3 your age, either.

You can keep up with the attempts at offending me, though. It just proves that you have no way to intellectually make a stand for yourself. Toodles.

(And by the way, I was serious about the friends comment. I hate having enemies, even if they're no threat to me. <3 )

I'll ignore the intellectually beaten comment since it's just there to bait me.

Look, either you want to take the piss out of me and slag off my experience when you have no idea what I do or you want to be my friend. Which is it?

Blimey, IIgnot! As somebody who has left the road of the flamer (ie. me!), I mustr say you are a rather aggressive poster in this thread.

Not that I'm joining the argument. I don't flame etc.

Just want to say of a threat I had recently that shows that ANYof us can get a virus, spyware problem etc, and not be treated like an idiot for doing so. Okay? Okay???

I am not a tech head. I have no idea what goes on under my keyboard, and don't want to. Why should I? I use my lptop for the purposes I bought it-I didn't buy it to learn how it works.
So I understand that it is possible to get into serious trouble on the net. I research and buy the best antivirus, spyware, firewall programs I can, and don't mind paying for them. Saves me the head ache. I don't open attachments, have told my wife about the problems, and mostly have a trouble free happy time on the net.

Recently somebody managed to hijack my ebay account, and started trying to sell very expensive motorbikes from my account. No email to say the password had changed, no email listing the items being sold etc. I only found out because somebody emailed me asking if I could deliver to God knows where. Terrible, Ebay instantly sorted it all out, updated all my software, ran every test, deleted all spyware etc. I am SO careful but it got on there... How? Well, I think I've found out...

I used to use Explorer exclusivly. Tried Opera, didn't like it etc. Now I use Firefox. But as a consumer, the improvements are really cosmetic. I only know it's better cos you guys told me. Why should people know that internet explorer is SO bad? Why should I know that activeX is awful? Who said I needed a Goddam PHD before using my lappy?

Anyway, now that I have Firefox, I recently had another email from ebay, from a buyer asking about something I was selling. It was from ebay, it looked like an ebay email. It just was all there. "Oh No" I thought, "not again". So I clicked on the link to contact the buyer to tell him I wasn't selling, and Firefox asked me if I really wanted to open this executable file....?

Ebay confirmed that it wasn't from them. It would have taken me to a page where I had to enter my password etc. (I always have to di this with ebay, never stored in a cookie). Then they would have had me! And had I still been using internet explorer, that would have happened!

So before you shout down my neck about being a moron, I'm as careful as a non nerd can be! It's just very easy to get spyware! The people that write this are serious criminals. Iignotus, you could be done, probably not by the above scam, but you could. Anyone could. Even Bill Gates!

But hopefully not him, he's the best!

Sometimes I lament that people don't need to be experts to use computers these days. It would solve a ton of problems for everyone if the computer illiterate weren't using computers and getting themselves into trouble (I work in tech support and I can tell you that 90% of the problems people have with computers are self-inflicted). The other side of that, though, is that without such widespread use and acceptance of computers and technology it likely wouldn't have progressed to the point it's at today, and if it had it certainly wouldn't be as cheap as it is.

That's off-topic, though. As for the original question, the only real solution is to format and reinstall. If you do this, though, download all your patches and service packs BEFORE you format and burn them to a CD. When you reinstall, do NOT connect to the internet. Install the service packs and whatnot first, THEN connect to the internet. I've actually seen Windows XP infected with spyware and viruses before the install finishes if it's online, so you want to lock down the machine as much as possible before you go online.

Gah @ tech support.

Number of times ive been told to reinstall modem before they go "oh, we havent turned so and so on at this end"

Also im not retarded, I know how to set up shit.

Formatting is for the weak, just be fucking sensible for fucks sake, im not formatting my hard drive every once in a while as I know how to use shot.

Must stop drinking/ posting/ I dunno what im on about/ waffles/ explodes.

no. my definition of hypocrite is someone whose every post in this thread contains an insult complaining that he's being insulted.

Well I'm just trying to slag and counter the things you said about my experience and generalisations as to what I couldn't possibly know. But I would love to "kiss and make up" as it were, and drop our argument and just mutually acknowledge that we both know a lot about what we're talking about.

lubidog, that has nothing much to do with OS security, that has to do with user security (which you may not have been in control of).

I get very unsettled when I hear something like that. Obviously, you don't and shouldn't need to be a Computer Science Major to use a computer, but they are incredibly powerful with huge potential, and things that many people trust their livelihoods with (your eBay account, businesses, credit card billing, etc.). Believe it or not I'm not about 'bashing n00bs' or flaming people. I'm about telling people how to be more in control of their computers so they don't get screwed over by something they own.
I only know it's better cos you guys told me. Why should people know that internet explorer is SO bad? Why should I know that activeX is awful?
Because you're doing financial transactions with it! You're putting your money on the line with something that you're not sure of how it goes about its business. Would you rather store your money in a dollar-store safe under your bed, or in a National Bank that has a protection plan? Like I said, it's your own livelihood, and some people are being haphazard with it. That what a lot of people are trying to get across when others see them as flaming newbs or whatever. Your machine could get zombied, your information stolen, and worse -- how could you not make yourself research into how to protect your investment?
So before you shout down my neck about being a moron, I'm as careful as a non nerd can be! It's just very easy to get spyware! The people that write this are serious criminals. Iignotus, you could be done, probably not by the above scam, but you could. Anyone could. Even Bill Gates!
You have to be more careful. It's the responsibility you need to take when you're using a computer. Just because nearly every house in the U.S has a computer doesn't mean that it's targeted to pedestrians. That's one misconception that many people have going on to a computer -- that they are safe when dealing with things like their money. With some people, it's like they're getting in a car without knowing how to drive well (which happens too often as it is). And of course anyone could get duped, but not only is the scheme you mentioned really quite basic and easily avoidable if you know the proper precautions (honestly! it really is! I'm not saying that to make you feel stupid), but the more that you know about your computer, the safer you are.

The point of people like me, with my mindset at least, is to try and help those that aren't as safe as they can be. Sometimes it comes off wrong because we get frustrated trying to tell people things that they either think they know all about, or things that they simply don't understand. Sometimes it comes off wrong sheerly out of personal zeal. But I can say personally that my intentions are much more on the side of trying to help people than to make fun of them.

Just to clear up my original post regarding the topic: I don't care what you all think my intentions are, It was the best advice he got up until that point, as fact always is. It is his fault for having his computer fuck over that badly, as one or two viruses/worms generally don't do something that devestating. And he also clearly (to me) wasn't formatting his hard drive, he was just re-installing windows, which does nothing but re-install some executables and dlls. It doesn't patch his system, it doesn't remove viruses, it doesn't do anything. It's a common newbie mistake, something that I've guided people through doing properly dozens of times.

Just drop it guy, stop trying to get quick shots in. He is technically right. However, the purpose is not to sit back and laugh at people who get screwed over by criminals, it's to help them. And I disagree with "getting themselves into trouble", but you can't throw caution to the wind.
