Actually its quite scary how quickly you can get infected, recently built a new machine logged on the net for less than a minute i needed to check my mail quickly for something and i was still installingand hadn't got round to the stage of installing my virus checker and firewall. Within that time i had been infected.. only wnet to hotmail.com and that was that. And boy was it a pain stoped my firewall installing etc..

Key is if you get infected use a webscanner or 3 different ones as i did in tis situation, file sometimes is not deletable, s note the name of the exe. switch of disconnet the your network cable and boot into safe mode and delete the bastard. The as extra precaution rescan with the webscanners.. I say use a webscanner cause some viruses can stop your pc virus scanner operating .

Would be fine were it not for the fact MS now require you be connected to the internet to validate your version of windows when patching...
Autopatcher?

Why would you have Microsoft anti-spyware? Get a good product; same goes with your anti-virus. And if you use these programs correctly, things won't get by unless you do something incredibly stupid (and even then, any good program will recover from it).
Microsoft Anti-spyware is a Rip-off of GANT antispyware, and is an excellent spyware solution. Random spurious linkage.

There is no spyware program that will stop or detect every infection. This particular infection hasn't been picked up by 10 scanners inc HijackThis. I had only been able to even detect where it was located with lots of log trawling and going through the registry.
It's still the fault of you or someone in your family who's acting stupid. I didn't treat my computer like it was made of glass, I just had a few programs installed. And it's a VERY old computer, so you can't try that "slows down the comptuer" argument. Obviously you don't have adequate protection since you implied that you don't even run a firewall, which is utter bullshit (not to mention that you don't know how to re-install Windows properly).

Fix your computer, stop letting people (possibly including yourself) do stupid shit to the computer, and stop whining, or live with viruses, ads, pop-ups, and spyware -- and stop whining. I've given you the answers that WORK in this thread many times, there's no reason not to heed them.

Oh if you've only been using a single adware removal program for your scanning I'd bet you've all sorts of interesting entries in your hijack this log...

you have nerve calling me an idiot :D

I have fucking NOD32 DEMO, and adaware SE, and yes, i have some spyware, BUT:::

my computer operates fine. very rarely do I get pop-ups, and on really rare occasions I get a fucked up virus due to my stupidity that makes me format windows.

Its not a big deal, but your making it one. STOP doing whatever your family or yourself are doing, and your computer will be fine.

I also have about 10 gigs of porn, and I go to free porn sites all the time. STILL, MY COMPUTER IS FINE, AND MY INTERNET IS FAST

Alright, guys, here's the rundown:

You get spyware from quite a few different places:
  • 3rd party websites (porn or gaming)...
  • Clicking on something stupid (IM or e-mail)...
  • Downloading it and installing it yourself (idiotic)...
Guess what, these are ALL your fault. If you get spyware it's always your fault, damnit, when will you noobs get this through your heads.

Although, you may be asking yourself "well, since i'm so dumb, what are you going to tell me to do to fix this?" and.. i have an answer for you ignorant bastards:
  • Linux ( www.distrowatch.com )
Yes, that's right folks, linux. But if you continue to use windows, please do me this favor:
  • Stop bitching about spyware, and start bitching at your family... either that, or install some basic preventative measures like the intelligent people in this thread have been telling you to do. I'm sorry you are so bad with computers, really i am, but don't take it out on everybody who's trying to help you and know ALOT more than you do... period.

wow. What an entirely rude thread.

This guy asks for help, recieves it in the first post and then the thread devolves into this, well done. I hope you feel proud of yourselves.

but just to add fuel to the flames:

virus, adware and firewalls are all playing a game of catch-up to the virus writers (even advanced heuristics can't detect EVERYTHING), to suggest that any, or all in combination, of these softwares are infallible is ignorant and rather naive. However, thats not say that doing this will SEVERLY reduce the likelihood of infection.

Oh and lets take the medical metaphor a little further; why not ask everyone you choose to ride bareback with (gotta love those euphemisms) to provide a full medical history verified by a gp, plus a complete list of all previou sexual partners and their verified history as well...

Sorry but I just had to reply to this Linux comment.

Answer me this. If we all stop using windows and move over to Linux do you think the Virus Writers will stay on windows or do you think they will move over to Linux.

Stop acting like Linux is secure it isn't. It's just a minority OS. An excellent OS but nevertheless a minority OS that's why it has fewer viruses.

Riddle me this, batman. The Unix security model is much different than that of Windows -- in such a fashion that it is much, MUCH stronger. Anyone who uses this tired remark about "OS popularity" in relation to viruses understands nothing of value about either OS in the comparison.

Until Microsoft fixes the deep, underlying problems with their OS line (which may never happen), Unix-based systems will ALWAYS have a natural advantage security-wise over them.

hmmm... reminds me of a stupid friend of mine who has NO firewall or protection of any kind on his computer. He then downloads a bunch of p2p programs which he uses to download a bunch of illegal programs (mostly games), music, and porn. Then he complains about having to reinstall windows every 2-3 months :p

About linux not being any more secure than windows, this is bullshit. I don't use linux (wouldn't work with my wireless usb adaptor :( ), but I have read quite a lot about it and it is MUCH more secure than windows. Any form of unix is more secure than windows.

Step by step guide to avoiding windows headakes...

1. Get this, and use it to destroy everything on your HDboot'n'nuke

2. buy or download, zonealarm, norton AV+systemworks, adaware, firefox. install

3. tweek windows to goodness.

4. install games, and everything that windows doesent have and try to have fun.

5. Install linux, and use it for everything execpt playing games

6. rinse and repeat every 3 mounths :( (execpt for linux)

Thank you.

If your clever enough on Windows then you wont have many problems, if your not how the fuck are you supposed to use Linux?

Also I switched to Mandrake a while back but my modem wasent supported, unless I recompiled the kernal - such an easy task for a Linux newbie.

I'm not going to argue with you. My 20 odd years experience in professional IT counts for nothing ;)

Mmmm, seems like I'm not the only one thinking along these lines. Check the October 13th headline.
Obviously your 'experience' doesn't count for anything, what with it being wasted time since it imparted nothing to you.

I never said unix platforms were impenetrable. I said that unix/linux today is much more secure than windows today, and it will remain that way until microsoft cleans up its act. Unix/linux can not reach the same critical mass that the current incarnation of windows has/does/is unless something gets broken.

And what was the point of linking me to a generic security web page? The October 13th headline, you say? Let's dissect this one: "Grisoft, makers of the popular AVG Anti-Virus offering, has warned that it is "only a matter of time" before Linux becomes widely targeted by virus and malware writers." That's not biased at all I'm sure, since an ANTIVIRUS RETAILER would have nothing to gain from spreading fear about viruses, right? Oh wait... no, it's definately a wasted attempt at a comeback, one which proves your lack of knowledge on the matter. You get points for pulling something off of google in a pinch, though.

But wait -- what's the second headline, right down under the Grisoft advertisement? "First family of Windows Vista viruses unleashed". Sounds bad, right? Well, even though it does outline the insecurities that even the next-generation of windows has, I'm someone that actually does reading and research. As someone that knows how a computer works, I know this particular threat is rather dismissable, since it is just a shell script that removes files, much like if a bash script containing "cd / && rm -rf" were executed with superuser privileges. WSH does have undeniable security flaws, though, a trend that is frequented by microsoft.

Thanks for playing! Maybe if you read up on these things, you can win the prize next time. Too bad about the wasted 20 years though -- I'd feel terrible if a huge part of my life were spent learning nothing.

I didn't reply to tempest because his message was full of flames and he registered just to post it. Sounds like a troll, so I suggest that you ignore him.

iignotus, although I agree with you about AV makers spreading fear, 90% of spyware is spread through user ignorance instead of security flaws. Although the superuser/user idea in unix prevents a lot of damage, processes could still collect private data (incl. passwords), display banner ads or delete files, so the linux virus threat is still very real.

Absolutely; the user is the biggest security hole in computing.
Although the superuser/user idea in unix prevents a lot of damage, processes could still collect private data (incl. passwords),
Sure they can, but they're still limited with the permissions of the user that started them. Stealing passwords, deleting files, etc, is a very real possibility in that situation; however, the damage is severely minimized by way of ownership and permissions. It may be able to nick the surface, but it can't bring down the entire structure (unless the sysadmin is completely inept  ).
so the linux virus threat is still very real.
Well, it depends on your definition of 'real'. If you're comparing it to the virus/worm/ad-/mal-ware situation on Windows, then it's not very real at all. If your saying it's real in the fact that theoretically, it could be worse than it is, then sure.

However, Linux has had this "very real threat" for years and years, at least as far back as 1999 or so (and probably since its creation)... and nothing of note has happened.

And just to note, about Linux not being a target? I think almost a third of all servers in the U.S alone would be a pretty big target....

iignotus I suggest you get a bigger hat for your avatar since at the rate your head is expanding recently you're very likely to cause yourself some serious damage.

:p

Good job doing nothing but insulting me. At least I also properly refuted your claims with fact. Step away from the computer, the debate is over. You lose, I win. It's okay, everyone's wrong occasionally -- the first part to correction is admitting you're wrong (you don't have to, I'll just consider it was implied with your insubstantial post).

Cheers mate -- personal attacks don't bother me. People who claim they know better but then give up (i.e, you) do. I still hope we could be friends though :D
