Howdy,

I'm a real sucker for good plots in videogames, one of the reasons I like to play rpg's so much.
I recently finished Drakengard (all endings), which I first bought over a year ago.
I didn't like it all, nothing of it I though was good. So, a month ago I replay it (I never finished it before) and really took note of the story.

The game is very strange, amazing and moving story, bloody and violent, as evenly strange classical music, etc... It's been since I finished FFX 3 or so years ago that I was moved by a videogame.

So, my question is, can anyone advice other videogames of which you can say the plot was great and even touching. :p (I'd like you -not- to reply "Just read a book", I'm still a gamer. :) )

Fahrenheit from Atari (I think it's called Indigo Prophecy in the USA). Completely unique style of gameplay that I loved and a pretty well thought-out story to keep you going. http://www.atari.com/fahrenheit/
I have the PC version, so I'm not sure how well the controls work on consoles.

I was talking to someone about game storylines a while back, and I can't for the life of me remember the one we both agreed was the best.
I've always thought The Digg had one of the greatest plots, if you're in to sci-fi adventure games.

Eternal Darkness of the gamecube

Really? I saw that for £5 the other day but wasn't sure - the box is really vague and I hadn't heard of it before.

However, that reminds me of Beyond Good and Evil, which had an excellent plot, too. And a pretty moving ending, actually.
Finished that for the third time not long ago (still can't get that last blasted pearl!).

Planescape Torment on the PC. Possibly the best game to ever slip under the rpg buyers radar.

I bought Planescape Torment on White Label for a tenner and it was the best tenner I ever spent.

Read the Wiki for info.

In fact as I haven't played this for years I think I might fire it up again. :D

I loved Fahrenheit to death and then vowed to destroy Atari for the ending. MAN that ending was bad. As soon as the protagonist went all Super Saiyajin and the purples revealed themselves stop playing. I wish I had.

Buy it. This game is worth every penny. The storyline is OK, nothing too great, but the game is so good.... the insanity effects are really unique and fit very well into the world. Personally I finished it several times.

As for other games with good storylines, Planescape: Torment. Hands down still my favourite RPG and should be very affordable. The graphic is not up to current standard (the game is pretty old) but I did not feel that this detracts from the game. I love it to death.
Also I recently got killer7 for the PS2. I am not entirely sure if the plot is good because is so freaking surreal and abstract. I don't even know which character I am playing and what exactly happens, but I love it :D By the way, this should be a great game to play while drunk, and by great I mean nauseating :D
Last idea: Vampire Bloodlines. This game has a shitload of bugs and loads incredibly slow, but if you are prepared to put some time into upgrading and manipulating it to run smoothly you'll find a very nice plot that I find really believable. Unfortunately once again the last third or so kind of loses the connection and the game degenerates into one wild firefight after another. It's still relevant to the plot, but from a gameplay perspective it becomes a little repetetive. If you can get it cheap, go for it - it's a good game with lots to do. Also it has Malkavians (Try talking to stop signs for a quick and stupid joke :D).

Okay, the endings weren't great, but the action sequences and general game style were very good.
Forgot to add a warning that there are three (that I found) sex scenes (interactive, no less), so some people may want to avoid if it offends them (possibly not every region, though).

Buy it. This game is worth every penny.

In that case, I will. Ta

As for other games with good storylines, Planescape: Torment.

Do you know, I was thinking of that too? How odd.
The only flaw I found with Planescape was the final level in the shadow realm.
I was a thief throughout the whole game and found that the shadows were too hard to sneak past.
I vowed to pick it up again and retrain as a warrior before entering the shadow realm, but never got around to it.

Actually, I think I might play that again after I've completed Oblivion. Thinking back on how long and absorbing that game was, I really miss it.

I second that, I recently finished that game, and I must say it was incredibly moving, I loved every minute of the story.

Beyond Good and Evil is, indeed, superb. It's about government conspiracy, and it's just told so well.

Indigo Prophecy (aka Fahrenheit in Europe) is also great, and it controls amazingly well on the PS2. There's almost no use of any buttons, which is cool.

And you can't mention IP without mentioning the greatest story ever told in a game: Shenmue and Shenmue II. After all, the makers of IP were heavily influenced by these two games.

Also recommended:
Grandia 2
Skies of Arcadia
Lunar Silver Star Story Complete (or Lunar Legend for GBA)
Tales of Phantasia (SNES, GBA)

£5 Quid is a steal, its qute hard to come by now, scored 9.6 in IGN, a very good game that always gets over looked as its not part of well advertised franchise

Duck Hunt ( NES )

Seriously:

Even if I just played it at a friend's house for a short time, Fahrenheit really seems to be really well written..
And because it was one of the first rpg's I played, I think the games from the Final Fantasy serie have a good story, too.
And Eternal Darkness for the Cube. Bought it for around 10€ but it's great!

The FF series are amazing IMO, but too mainstream to mention I guess. Everyone knows FF7 and FF8. :D

I don't have a GC but I'm gonna buy fahrenheit. (and keep my eyes open for Planescape)

As for Tales of Phantasia, I must have played all the good snes rpg's. :) :p

I was going to say pong, but another asshole stepped in ;)

Phatasy Star 2 & 4 (3 was lame)

Grandia 3 is very good thus far (we just started on disc 2), as was 1 and 2 (2 especially)
