What sorts of colors or palette types work best on the GP2X LCD? Does bright or neon-y work better than grey/brown and mottled? Contrasting colors side-by-side, brightness bleed, all that - any sort of experiences and advice you wish to pass on regarding this?

Good Question. I could need such a Limited Palette for creating Graphics. Onto the GP2X Colours are not that easy because the Gamma Curve of the F100 LCD is a little bit weird, with A_SN's Gamma Tool, the Colours are a little bit better. :)
Some programs use 32Bit graphics which also looks ugly (gradients) onto the 16 Bit GP2X. A GP2X own Palette may have advantages.

For the latest version of my REWORD game I used a freely downloadable script from The DreamChess project at:
http://svn.berlios.de/svnroot/repos/dreamc...olour-reduce.sh

This uses the (Linux) ImageMagick 'convert' util to reduce 32bit images down to 16bit (rgb565) format. This made a hell of a difference on my backgrounds which were gradients (done in GIMP), and now look almost as good on the GP2X as on my PC.
