A preloaded application which you input the date you purchased your rechargeable battery. The application will estimate when your battery has to be replaced, when the time is up to replace a window will pop up asking that its time to purchase new batteries. When new batteries is purchased you can reset the countdown.
 
And how would you know when brand X expires? You`d had to test all sorts of battieres for runtime and lifetime o.O

Plus the GP2X doesn't have a battery backed up clock so it would have no way of telling how long you had been using the batteries. Add to this the fact that the chances are you'll be using more than one set (how would the 2x know which set you were using) and it would also depend on how often you charge them as the life decreases after a certain number of charges.

Along these lines, I think a battery meter with a higher resolution than just 3 steps would be quite good, of course, far from essential, more like a bonus goody. :)
 
How many levels does the one in gmenu show? Is it only three levels too (does it get the batterie info from the firmware?)
