Funny what time can do to a person. I recently purchased a GP2X F100 (first edition) on ebay because I remember playing with the thing around 20 years ago. In searching around I found these forums, and then I found myself talking about the GP2X and other GPH consoles. Apparently I was very into them and I seemed to have known my stuff...lol!

So, I tried some old passwords and was actually able to get back into my account amazingly. I haven't logged in since 2011.

Now I am "new" to the GP2X again. I mean, I remember a lot, but I am having hard time remembering one thing and maybe someone can chime in and help.

The GP2X (from the auction pictures) seems to have FW 1.10 installed. Quite old. I used to use Open2X myself. But what I can't remember is if I could go right from V1.xx firmware to Open2X DR7. Or, do I have to incrementally update the unit with official firmware (2.0.0, 2.1.1) and THEN go to Open2X.

Does anybody know?

Thanks!

I wouldn't know, but at least chatgpt is convinced an upgrade from 1.1 or 1.10 is possible without any intermediate updates to 2.1. Based on forums post and firmware guides. But AI can sometimes dream, so no guarantees it's correct.

I'd probably upgrade to V2 before installing open2x simply to get the more reliable bootloader. From what I can remember original bootloader did have the unfortunate "autobrick" problems, and also struggles with lots of SD cards.

Welcome back btw :)

Thanks! I kind of figured best to do would be to move to v2 first. Let's just hope I don't brick it. It'll be the fastest return and departure in history. Lol!

I have a variety of old SD cards, so that's where I'll start. I even have an 8MB Canon SD card! I recall having no issues with open2x with larger (32GB SDHC) so after I get there I can move up to a larger card and play around with this thing again. Just trying to remember everything again now.

Thanks for the help and the welcome back!

Well, I have to say thank goodness Open2x exists. When I went to update the firmware from 1.10 to official v 2.0.0 it appears it updated only the bootloader but not the kernel. Therefore, green screen GP2X boot screen and then...nothing. Then, I tried to use the official 2.1.2 update and again it updated the bootloader to v2.1.2, but that's all you get, green GP2X screen with version and did not boot any further.

Then, I tried the Open2x installer and that went through with no issues at all, whew!

So, one F100 updated to Open2x (and installed the newer Open2x bootloader Orkie released in 2020) and we are good there.

I found a deal on yet another F100 (this time the second release of the black model with the "cup" style joystick). From the pictures the seller sent me it is running v4.0 firmware which from what I recall was not a great firmware at all.

I wonder if installing Open2x over this will work OK?
