The Archos 5 Internet Tablet (i.e. the android version) has a new alternate firmware from Archos for enthusiasts and developers based on Angstrom Linux. This opens the possibility of directly accessing all the OMAP hardware through C or assembler assuming Archos has not done anything stupid. Anyone tried it yet?

Wut?
This seems to be bad research from JKK, or not?
This is for the older Archos 5, not the Android tablets.
I posted a thread about it months ago.

Angstrom was also recently released for the Android internet tablets.
I found this on the Archos site: http://www.archos.com/products/imt/archos_5it/dualoslinux.html

Are the Archos 5 media player and Archos 5 net tablet basically the same device, just different OS?

They are completely different devices. Archos uses the same name for different devices. They are distinguished by their "Generation". The older Archos 5(6th Gen.) has got a different SoC. It's a 600MHz Cortex A8 OMAP3(I forgot the number) without SGX(I don't know if it has a DSP). The 7th Gen. IT has got a OMAP3440(800MHz Cortex A8).

Thanks for the info Mali, would like to update the Media player version i have (archos 5 250gb) to run a different OS.

Will have to look into this further. Should keep me going until Pandora arrives!

You should check the Archosfan forums, for example here:
http://forum.archosfans.com/viewtopic.php?p=199104#p199104
It might be possible to dual boot, soon.

Dual boot would be fantastic. The Archos 5 has a decent processor and all that storage space, would be great to be able to push it further than what Archos allow us to.

Thanks for the link Mali. :D

I wish Archos would open up the 605 like this. :(

There are some new hacking methods for getting Qtopia running on the 605, check out the Archosfans hacking board. http://forum.archosfans.com/viewforum.php?f=34

I have an old Archos gmini, but I stopped buying Archos when they started nailing everything down, now you can't even swap hard drives like you used to be able to. Such a shame, they used to be so cool about their hardware.

Company got to big. They started selling well and saw that if they locked up their platform (even tighter than it was) that they could make more money. Every company goes through this eventually. Hopefully with all these ARM devices coming out it will hurt their sells and customers will let them know it's because their hardware is so locked up that no one will buy it.

We're already seeing it actually, why do you think they're allowing unofficial software now? People are wising up to them.

Go Fighting Tabby has been around for ages, but nothing really productive has come of it. It's a way to run apps on an Archos tablet but you have to redo the hack every time it powers down, IIRC. There's still no way to run a completely open OS and install apps and shit. I'm mainly interested in seeing a community firmware update that will make the device more responsive and possibly add FLAC support, but the chances of that happening are nil.
