Apps.openpandora.org?

Still this was pretty lame, other threads in Ask Craig Questions have responses and nobody had problems with them, but mcobit's and mine have all of them deleted (or hidden, no difference) and the threads locked. Suddenly the rules became oh so important. I can't help but think Craig doesn't want to see supportive responses that were there and is engaging in censorship. This feels no different to "rewriting history" we have had here during Soviet occupation times.

(in response to "please remove my releases from apps.openpandora.org")

I would, but Ed broke apps.openpadora.org some time ago when something on the server changed and I'm unable to access it since.
That was pretty lame response too, ED upgraded the server sometime last year (I know this because my personal git repos broke), so it's obvious apps.op.org were abandoned for at least that time.

i think that different moderators behave differently ie sony might be the only one who hides the threads whilst the other mods dont.

Please, just ask ED or Craig a question. It's not the end of the world if you don't receive a response from ED or Craig for a while, or period. There are many other ways to contact ED or Craig.

Remember, some questions are easier to answer than others. For example, I can be asked a question and then quickly answer with a Yes or No. But then, I can also be asked a question that requires some thought and care in answering, and in most cases I'd say, "I don't have the mental strength and the time to think about this at the moment...nor do I have the time to tell the person asking the question that he/she will not be getting a reply/response any time soon".

Also, people are genuinely busy and have lives.

One more thing...

99% of the questions in the Ask Craig/Ask ED forums section are directed at Craig and ED, so I'm not sure why some people need to make a statement (or answer the question themselves) before Craig and ED does.

From now on, I will not hide threads, but instead have myself enter the thread, if need be to remind people to please wait and have patience.

Stickied thread edited.

EDIT:

Also, I will be the one to reply first if a topic is made regarding the updated sticky, because with Craig and ED's busy schedule, I don't think they have the time to answer this particular kind of question. It's a quick and easy answer by me on behalf of Craig and ED.

In this case it made sense. If 1 person says there are problems with your product you write it off, if dozens say there is something wrong then something IS wrong.

It's more a case of Sony being the one who volunteered to maintain those sections, which he does in accordance with how they were always going to be run.

[edit - the following is directed at the topic in general, not at you Wrath of Khan]

They're unique subforums on this or any site. The whole idea of them is for questions to be posted, and for ED or Craig to have the first reply. Otherwise it's just ask everyone else questions, which is what the rest of the site is for. This was the concept behind them from day one; reserving replies for Craig or ED has been the method from day one.

Now I don't know why this has blown up all of a sudden. Perhaps Sony had been busy and some conversations had been allowed to run before Craig and ED got to reply. Then when Sony went in to catch up on stuff (again, according to the way those forums have been run from day one) people have been taken by surprise. If that's the case, then I can understand the reactions. But I am personally offended at suggestions that mods are practising censorship. It's just ludicrous. We are volunteer community members who care about this scene, and the openness of it, as much as anyone. That's why we volunteer.

Water under the bridge... hopefully everyone is on the same page now. Craig and ED post first. We can manage this by 'hiding' posts until the guys get their word in, or we can leave them visible and rely on people to wait. Once the initial answer has been posted, the thread is of course open for anyone to talk in.

Now I'm going to go and do something less dramatic with my Saturday. Peace yo. :)

It hasn't though, as I said, a HTML5 version has been in the works for some time. I'm sorry I've not got it online fast enough, I've been dealing with issues I

consider to be substantially more important, such as orders, customer emails, the new Pandora website etc.

I've now taken apps offline for you.

I really don't know what else I can do.

In regards to Ask I and Ed questions, that forum is for exactly that, a separate section so that definite answers can be posted, that's always been the rule there.

If we are to allow other replies in there then it might as well just be part of general talk.

Why can't anyone reply to the threads now, that craig has answered?

Ok, so craig changed permissions and thats it?

Maybe you should close this section alltogether then or let new posts be approvee, like ed said.

Yeah Craig experimented with settings. It's still under discussion so don't take it as final. My view is that we need to be clear on the 'first reply' rule, but discussion should be open after that.

For instance, I wrote in the specific thread because I just didn't see, it was in the "Ask Craig section". :D Happens when only searching the forums for new content and don't pay attention to the Forum sections. ^^"""

The problem is that the way the "Ask [...] Questions" subforms work is broken:

  • The way these subforums work is violating the important rule to never forcefully change other people's content (and on the surface, hiding from public == changing) and never forcefully stop people from expressing themselves. /Of course/ people who use their great power to enforce the current guidelines of these subsections will end up being questioned.
  • These subforums are designed for specific ways of using them, while people may use them very differently. For instance, judging by some of the posts in these subforums, it appears that quite a few people who jump into topics there are coming from the "New Content" page, which makes it all too easy not to see whom the topic is targeted at (even I made this mistake once, well knowing about the problem).

The way I see it, the following would be a good solution:

  • If there's anything like a 'Moderation guideline' on this forum, then I strongly suggest to include: 'Never ever close threads, delete posts, or change posts, except when:' as one of the most important rules, and if you want to, possibly make that rule publicly visible. If there's no guideline, then this rule would be a good start.
  • Depending on the mechanics that the forum software offers for these sorts of things, you could consider something like adding a template to each new post in the "Ask [...] Questions" subforms that includes a note stating that people should not reply before Craig/Ed did. This way, people would hardly have a chance not to understand what they're about to reply to. In exchange, the subforums could be non-locked (or non-autohide-enabled).

Even in the View New Content page you should be able to quite easily see whom the thread is targeted at. Example below.

I do not care about sections, so why should I look at it? ;) There is a dominant blue link and some pale grey whatever behind. So it easily can't happen and I also didn't knew there is a section where discussion is not allowed.

However, now I'm smarter and it will not happen again, case closed, get a drink. ^^

I know. But read: How Little Do Users Read? (Also: How Users Read on the Web)

Further problems:

  1. Just as Fusion_Power's comment suggests, it should be assumed that the grey text is likely to be disregarded quite often (in particular, but not exclusively, by people who prefer the "View New Content" function). There's a reason the grey text has an unobtrusive color.
  2. Furthermore, people who do know about the subforum's name might not know about its specific rules yet.
  3. Lastly, there's always a chance that while someone's thinking about a topic's question, the rules vanish from awareness until after a reply is worded and submitted (Somewhat relevant: Short-Term Memory and Web Usability, definition of 'capture error').

...all of which is hardly possible if a note is included as (almost) a forcing function.

As we have said, several times, if you want a discussion, open your thread in general talk or the general questions forum.

The whole point of Ask Craig/Ed questions is just that, a definite answer, like a FAQ.

No you have not, only the main page is down, people still can get old versions and the problem is here, but it's still better than nothing I guess.

It's still "interesting" that this only came into effect when more controversial question was posted, suddenly the effective rules changed (yeah there were formal rules but they were never enforced up to that point).
