1: Does the screen cover scratch easily?

2: How's the battery life?

3: Control stick work well?

4: How's the refresh rate/FPS average in each game?

there's already two really good PSP threads here on the board, as well there are several hands on reviews all over the 'net which would answer all of your questions.

I do own one already, since Xmas... it has easily become my favorite system ever, and I have owned almost every system released since NES. Even though I bought one right after release and got gouged like a mofo on the price, I still feel it was worth every penny.

To answer your questions:

1. It does scratch relatively easily... this is easily one of my biggest gripes with the system. Since it doesn't fold over, the thing gets dirty very easliy, even in the slip cover case that I got in the value pack... so you end up cleaning it a lot, or at least, I do. I have only ever cleaned it with a special, soft, lint free cloth designed for cleaning eyeglasses, and using a special spray also for the same purpose, and still, I have accumilated a couple hairline scratches on the thing. And I am SO careful with it... for the price I paid you can believe I treat the thing like a fine piece of art.

2. Not nearly as bad as Nintendo fanboys would like you to believe. Claims of 3 hours and under are BS. Running Ridge Racer (supposedly the most graphically intensive game on the system) at full brightness (which you will rarely ever need or want to use) with full volume off the internal speakers, average is about 3.5-4 hours. With medium brightness which is more than adequate in most conditions, you're looking at more like 5 hours. With less intensive games, upwards of 6 hours. And before any fanboys would point and say "hah see the DS is better!" I have two DS's, which I bought for me and my wife, and both of us played the hell out of mario when we first got it... and guess how much battery life we averaged per charge?? 5-6 hours.....

3. yes and no. it's hard to get used to, and since it has a small range of motion, it can be very sensitive. It is TRUE, FULL analog though, some people were saying it wasn't. I've seen this when using it to control the camera in MGA and Golf.

4. RR runs very smoothly... most games do. I have noticed a bit of slowdown in MGA when there's like 5+ guys on screen in complicated areas... odd because RR looks much better and seems to use many more poly's than MGA, and RR never slows down.

If you're interested, I'm actually going to be selling a Japanese PSP value pack (comes with memory card, carry case, wrist strap, headphones) for $250 + shipping. It is used but still in fantastic condition.

Cloth, lense cleaner, AND it still has some hairlines? Well, looks like i'm investing in some of that entirely clear scratchproof polymer stuff. (Was going to get it for previous handhelds but shrugged it off) Now to find a place besides a factory LCD wholesaler that has it...

Sounds good, I'll try and pick one up sometime (sorry, kinda waiting for the US release. I hate not being able to read menus or things for challenge modes :p )

I got loads of scratches on my GP32 even while taking good care of it. The PSP screen definately smudges much easier ( I reckon that's partly because it's flush with the plastic like) but at the moment there are no scratches on my PSP.

my psp screen seems to have no scratches. Had it since it was released and i actually take it to work and im an electritian :O

I must be doing something really wrong then <_< Tell you what, I've had my GP32 for a month longer than I've had my PSP and have played it just about as much, and I don't have a single scratch on my GP. I clean it using the exact same method as I use to clean the PSP... it's odd because everyone was telling me how fragile and easy to scratch the factory GP screen cover is.... to me it would seem then that the PSP actually has the more fragile screen....

Also, and I dont know if this is the case here, but I have to say, I'm VERY VERY picky about stuff like scratches, that I'll spend so much time sitting there in the brightest lights or sunlight and actively seek them out, and even the tiniest hairline scratches to me are a bother. I'm betting half the people who say theirs have no scratches probably do they just don't notice or haven't looked hard enough for them. Take it out in the sun and look at it at all different angles... I guarantee you there's gonna be some on there.

Especially if their using the slip case that comes in the Value Pack.

The reason I say this (and here's an example of how anal I am with my systems) is because that most of the hairlines on my PSP run horizontally across the face of it... the same direction that the slip cover slides on and off. Whereas I have always made it a point... no, a RULE, to only wipe the cloth across the screen VERTICALLY, from bottom to top, when I'm cleaning it off. I only have one hairline scratch that I can see that runs vertically.

The horizontal ones are SO fine/thin that really, you cant see them in anything other than direct sunlight and then you really have to look hard for them.. So I don't even really count them.

I'll tell you what though, this system came new out of the box with some scratches on it. As have many of my other portable systems that I've bought in the past (GBA SP, Nomad and Neo Geo Pocket Color were HORRIBLE, out of factory sealed boxes just covered in hairline scratches... my GP was FLAWLESS however).

I really want to make some kind of hard cover I can place over the PSP's screen that's raised up, so that it doesn't actually TOUCH the screen (maybe some very thin foam rubber placed just around the border of the cover to raise it up 1mm or even less) and use that to keep even the slip case from touching the front of the thing. I did this with my GP, since the GP has the raised edge/lip around the screen, I just made a cover very akin to an eyepatch, to cover that when I'm not using it. It keeps dust out nicely as well as obviously protecting the thing from any kind of damage when I throw it in my pocket or whatever.

Could you not put two runners inside the slip cover which are aligned above and below where the screen will go? That way you avoid scratches without having to fiddle with the PSP itself.

I dont trust that case... it works fine if you ONLY put the PSP in it, but the pouches for games will sit right on the PSPs face when it's folded closed...

The cover I'm talking about making would have those 'runners' like you mention... just a sheet of hard plastic, cut to slightly larger than the screen itself, then with thin, foam rubber with one adhesive side stuck to the borders of the cover, so it would only touch the face of the system around the edge of the screen itself. This way the soft cover wont ever touch the screen.

Like I said I must be doing something wrong... I'm so... SO careful with this thing and it still got a couple scratches.
