Any Plans For Future Pandora Improvements?

That's pretty much how the Onestation works. The machine is just screen, power, controls, etc, and the cartridge contains an SoC. I wonder if a Pandora cartridge could be feasible? (If not a pointless downgrade with fewer controls).

I hope someone will establish a removable SoC socket standard in the future, that would push things forward. Imagine you could create a board design for the peripherals and just drop in your SoC of choice.
It's not very practical, considering that SOCs are generally used for embedded devices that are not designed to be opened and messed around with. Also even desktop processor pin configurations change fast enough that it's almost totally impractical to replace a processor by it self, even though it's possible.

He's absolutely right. Us short sighted leotards have bought this way too early, we should know better than to support a device that won't ever have a second revision if we don't support it from the beginning, lets all wait for the second revision... oh wait.

Honestly, it catastrophically stupid statements like these that literally cause rabbits to commit suicide

How does hardware need to be uniform
Because it would create a class of people who can run better games than the other class of people.
Also, some of the first batch people are like "hey you can't go adding better hardware to the later ones it's not fair I bought it first" or something.

It's just too much trouble, too many polls and useless threads of us posting the same shit over and over again. OP isn't going to waste time thinking about it.

So? They got it first. Everyone knows you shouldn't buy a product when it's first released unless you are a shortsighted tard.

Goddamn linux fanboys and their love for weak hardware.

I don't mean to be rude, but why are you on these boards again? In fact, do you even know what these boards are? if so you should know that a post like that will get quite a bit of flack from the community.

Because I am not being OpenPandora Ltd.-pro(drone)? What we're giving donations now because they're telling us how many motherboards fried and how long it's taking them to get a plastic case that you Americans won't moan about being "too flimsy" or "too cheapo"? FFS, They're a company just like any other.

I've never been more insulted in my life!
I'm not American, I'm Dutch!

Lol at this troll. Much better than the ones we have had recently. Keep feeding please :)

Without the first batch there would not be a second end of story, and if upgrades were made Im very sure Craig would not alienate the people that partly made pandora possible in the first place (the community and people who ordered)

So no... ordering from the first batch would not be retarded, but since you dont seem to be a customer who is 1) ordering a pandora or 2) being helpful to the community that helped it happen, I guess your opinion doesnt matter anyway :)

Actually, I am. But if this community is the group that OpenPandora's marketing is targeting, I don't see a very bright future for them.

How's Pandora any different from the PSP or DS now? They both have static hardware. (Well, unless taking out features is considered an upgrade)
If the DS or PSP were strong enough, I wouldn't even be here.

I didn't have an intention to troll when I first came, but Good God look at you people. You look like you ran through traffic.

Yup ran through it and came out good on the other side.

We can still see you on the curb, on the other side, trying to figure how to get to the other side. Dont worry, give it a few years and I'm sure you'll evolve enough to work out how to do it.

You just answered your own question. Pandora is stronger than PSP and DS, that's a difference. Even the newer ones aren't as strong as Pandora.

Have you considered that Pandora isn't just a PSP or DS with stronger hardware? Have you considered that hardware specs don't necessarily mean more fun games?

I like Pandora and everything. But if I were just looking to play the games I like, I would've picked DS. But I also wanted the UMPC/USB drive/Linux/Media player/TV Out combo.

In the end you can see from my number of posts that I am not full of hopeless praise for the Pandora, I own the PSP and DS but am looking forward to recieving my pandora (probably in January realistically). Having praise for the product doesnt make me braindead, I just have a different opinion.

But I appreciate what they are trying to attempt, your perception is they are a business like any other and should be expected to act as such, ours is different.

All Im saying is your not helping anything, your not even being critical, so how can you expect a good response?

That are fair points. Even x86 chips are often BGA these days. On the other side there are more things to come, like ARM nettops and devices with both ARM and x86 systems on board. We will have to see where the journey leads to. ARM technology will move into x86 territory and new standards may be invented.

I see it comes down to mention of power again. *sigh* Alight, I'll say it again. The Pandora is already as powerful as it needs to be for what it was designed to do, and much more powerful than any of the other devices that spawned it.

If you're thinking about it's usefulness being based on it's ability to display next-gen graphics then you are clearly thinking that it is something that it is not, it is NOT (and never was) a next-gen games console. Alternatively, if you are thinking that future batches should have hardware revisions to add faster chips to be better able to emulate modern systems, well you could play that game into infinity, or until the community abandons you for leaving them in the dirt when you release a new model every year.

Ultimately if you think that the Pandora isn't your cup of tea, you can go and find something that is. Coming here and calling the community and openpandora a bunch of idiots, and claiming that openpandora are idiots for targeting their device to us idiots... you don't seem to have twigged that this community basically IS openpandora, and that sort of makes you look foolish, doesn't it squire?

To be honest, that's what I really am looking forward to. I was hoping Pandora would be "enough", I have to admit the size factor is quite good. But you don't buy a 330USD computer for it's size factor, even 150 is stretching it. I suppose I will have to wait till it comes out before I judge the device for my uses.

Well, regarding Sugar_Kane's post. I never said "idiots", now that is outright rude and well.. too much of a cliche for a *troll*. Perhaps another case of "Paranoid criminal thinks everyone is pointing".

It's possible TI will increase the speed of the OMAP3, but the chances are the older chips will reach that speed anyway.

It looks like they might start saying they can all go to 750mhz. So you may well get a 'free' upgrade.

It seems so. The new beagleboards are using 720MHz chips since 600MHz parts are unavailable.

In my opinion both the PSP and the DS are portable game consoles with things like Internet and media playing tacked on.

The Pandora is a portable computer with gaming controls and much better suited for all three tasks IMO.

The difference between consoles and computers is that computers actually compute given information (e.g take input from the user and supply the output), consoles just run code. That's the way I've always told the difference anyway :)

I'm not even going to bother trying to explain the fact that the Pandora runs open source software and is programmer friendly.

Then by your definition consoles are computers:
  • they take input from the user: All the button presses on the controllers are detected by the console as input
  • They compute with the given information: The game needs to calculate the new position for your character from its previous position and current input, or whether that enemy touching means game over
  • They supply the output: With colorful graphics, but output nontheless

Consoles are just a specialised computer. The difference is that hardware/software it includes is geared towards providing entertaintment.

I think what you meant was that consoles are different from PCs, those are expected to do whatever the guys sitting in front wants to do, as long as the software has the capability to do so. It's like a tool, or more like an array of tools, it just does the job you want it to do. Consoles tend to fail at that (because they're not designed for it).

  • they take only predefined input
  • They only compute with information that has been previously setup
  • They supply only predefined output
I'd agree with your overall definition though, I was just overly simplifying things :)

EDIT: Forgot to mention the most important thing; consoles run firmware and not operating systems.
