Anti mosquito laser turret defense system of great justice

Man, that's genius, but unfortunatly i don't think it's possible to get anything like that easly.
So you're probably better off building one yourself with parts from eBay, all you need is the right image processing algorithm and a good (preferably military grade) hacked laser beam.

On a less extreme note though, have you tried any mosquito repelling vapour tablets? they're these small things that you put in an outlet-sized electric heater which produces a repelling vapour that prevents from any mosquito to fly in (or kills those who already managed to).
Works quite well in my experience.

Very cool!  Now do one for midges, and I'm sorted.

It should work equally well on any small flying insect.
Mosquitos are just the primary target because malaria.
Indeed, providing the camera has sufficient resolution to identify such small insects at a distance.  It'd need to be configured differently, because if you watch the video it explains it identified not only mozzies, but also the female ones that bite for zapping by sampling their wing-beat signature.

What a time to be alive... (unless you are a mosquito, or wasp, or slug?)

Was talking about this very idea whilst mosquitoes destroyed the ambience of a hitherto balmy and enjoyable summer evening. Surely the consumer model will be available soon?

I wonder how difficult it would be to make a variation that works on bipedal mammals.

You'd need a lot more power but if the software is calibrated correctly, it should work.

Could I still build one rather cheaply? :p   Unfortunately, I have a feeling that someone is already working on something like what I described.

My metabolism, amount of cholesterol in my skin, smell etc. has made me one of those lucky people mosquitos tend to ignore.

@illuminatus85: Recent studies support the idea that this depends on the bacterias you have on your skin rather than your metabolism itself.

My ex-girlfriend's cat was a perfect defense from mosquitoes, whenever I'd wake up in the night to the sound of a nearby mosquito I just had to nudge the cat a bit, she'd woke up and the buzzing would soon be replaced with the sound of a cat eating a mosquito.
