An experiment in forced nostalgia and questionable parenting

Wow. Yup. At early ages, we were all geniuses. Ballerina's start at age 4 and get scolded to get better. Just look at Michael Jackson. Would he be so good if he never got hit by his dad?

There is a price to pay for greatness.

Remind me of kids of Steve Erwin, or Crocodile hunter. They are were like 8 years old, and just play around with crocs and stuff... and survive it.

Or the excellent marksman the stolen childs are that are drilled to become soldiers. At age 10 they really can hit a target from far far away.

That is why you never talk to a child in baby talk. They 'get' it more than you think, even harder concepts like death.

At age 10 I was learning technical english, binary code (well, more binary math, really), by myself, to understand the zx Spectrum my mother got for herself. I beat her in all courses (which were magazines with boring exercises, but I did them anyway). (of course, now I know, as a parent, that the house does not clean itself, and the fridge doesn’t fill itself, and that you need to plan ahead for things, and the time you have is very limited as an adult).

I could do binary math better than normal math, and never understood why these were two different words.

Finally in midschool, I got "computer" classes, BBC Micro's, underpowered, greenscreen only. Very boring compared to the zx spectrum. And the stuff they taught... meh, all things I knew more than 2 years already. At that point I was poke and peeking on the commodore. Had a cartridge with assembler on it. and started learning a little assembler (and gaming, of course). But I reached a plateau, where nobody could do what you did, so I had nobody to hone my skill with. Sure, I spurred on that all kids in the neighbor hoods also got C64's but they used it differently. By then I could type blind (also because there were lots of programs at that time for the computers). Never got as good as my mother, she blazes when she types... well did, as we get older we get slower somehow. And typing was not my forte, as the zx Spectrum has all these green and red shift then 1 letter will print a whole command, thus it did not help to learn typing, only to know where each command is. The commodore was like throwing chicks in the water. You must learn to swim. Where are the commands... what are the commands? and if you make an error... mwahahah, good luck. I guess that is why the prompt feels so familiar now, although it was a hard master.

Back on topic.

Here in the Netherlands, we had a kid that sailed the world. I would be terrified at sea, but she felt at home, and at peace there. Stuff we "landrotten" will never "get". And she got it from her dad. So if anything, kids are destined for greatness, but only if they have role models around them they can reach out to, and look up to. It takes a village....

edit:

I wish I had though about doing this with my own :p He is now too old. Ho well :p
Never too old man.

Not sure why an introduction to classic gaming would be considered questionable parenting.

Sounds like good fun was had by both child and parent, that's not such a bad thing is it?

I've really enjoyed watching my daughter grow up with as much a love of games as I had. It was an absolute pleasure to see her using her own DS at 3 years old having been playing with mine at 2. What I've always tried to do is let her choose the games she likes rather than the ones I think she should like. Pleased to report that as well as Barbie Fashion Designer & Similar nonsense she adores Mario Kart, Minecraft, Smash Brothers and plenty of other truly superb games.

Despite being 'spoiled' by modern graphics it's good to see she loves the classics as well, couldn't get her off Manic Miner when we went to the Play Expo this year :)

I wonder if lil' Elliot ever gave Battletoads a go?

He must think modern games are far too complex in game design, yet easy to complete when compared to classic gaming.

Thats a personal decision of course, but I find that way to young to (be) engange(d) in "electronic" entertainment. Well thats not quite right, music and "electronically enhanced" games are fine.

Never did understand the 'they're too young for games argument' If kids enjoy them and the content is age appropriate, then what's the problem? Time limits have to be applied (no need to do this with a 2-3 year old due to short attention span), but that's like all good things i.e. let them have a few sweets rather than a bumper pack, an hour of TV but not a whole afternoon etc.

To me games are a far better form of childrens entertainment than TV / watching films and yet few parents have a problem with a 2-3 year old watching TV in moderation.

The DS is a great system for a 2-3 year old as it's got plenty of games that are essentially electronic toys. Electroplankton rules! :)

If the content is not age appropriate, then what's the problem?  Age appropriate rules sounds like what you're saying you've never understood.  I agree, but I've never understood that rule either.  I had less nightmares as a younger child than I do now as an adult, and I was able to change my mind faster and with less difficulty as a younger child than now.  Alcohol apparently screws with brain growth at young ages, but I've never heard of nudity and violence harming children.

Censorship is a difficult issue, especially to liberal minded free thinkers. By age appropriate I don't mean PEGI ratings but content that is clearly inappropriate, as decided by the parent / guardian for the child in question, be that due to game design (too difficult / boring) or questionable content (Medal of Duty, GTA, Manhunt etc.)

What is seen as acceptable of course varies considerably between people and changes over time, but I tend to go with my gut feeling rather than a reliance on official 'censors' such as the BBFC or Pegi etc.

I agree.  I am pretty sure the "questionable parenting" is using your child for an experiment.

Impressive how skilled kids can be if "trained" right from the beginning. "By the time he turned seven, Eliot had collected every star in Super Mario 64." Wow, I was not be able to nearly reach half enough stars maybe. OK I was ~18 When I first played Mario 64 and I never was a Consolero.

These old Arcade games that the kid started with were really hard, AFAIK I never have made it past the 3. Level in PacMan (don't laugh!). Compared to these Games, the Kid may be very bored when he reaches the modern games with Checkpoints, Autosave, health regeneration etc. :D

Then you don't agree with the idea that capable children can be too young for video games all together, but you do support the idea that children can be too young to be allowed to see certain kinds of video games, such as boring hard ones or questionable content ones?  Then I understand now.

I don't agree though, since it's never been laid out for me how those questionable video games can be harmful.

I'm confused? Loon didn't say "not age appropriate" or am I missing something?
I guess I should have started that post with an "And."  Loon said that as long as the content is age appropriate he doesn't see what the problem is, speaking with the oppinion that content that is "not age appropriate" is a problem.  I didn't see what that problem was, or know what he meant by age appropriate.  It looks like he's fine with one thing being censored but not another thing, and it isn't clear to me what the differences in effect between those things are.

enjoy the joy of of the older games
Excellent age to let him make one then...  here' s a suggested experiment for him then:

1. download kkrieger, a game in 96k. http://www.theproduct.de/

2. Install and have it run (windows, not sure about wine though... Yeah! Works under Wine!)

3. Call him over

4. Tell him about a wager. Let him guess how much the game takes up on the harddrive. Textures, sound AI, code, shading. Let him make an educated guess.

5. ????

6. Profit

If he likes it, show him the .produkkt http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=12511

You mean because this kid has more discipline (or patience, or willpower) and skills than some modern gamers?  I bet you are right, but there are games out there for people who like all kinds of gaming experiences.

True. I know there are also very hard games today like Super Meat Boy, Binding of Isaac, FTL, Dark Souls series, etc. I could not play these. I have no nerves for these games so even my willpower is not enough. I need to relax and there is nothing relaxing with these games so I stay with Minecraft and Diablo 3. ^^
My oldest daughter this morning...
Old retro C64, a young girl and NO Barbie? Well, GZ, parenting done right I would say. :D
