So I saw today that AvP 'classic 2000' was released on steam & there's nothing better to talk about atm. It looks good & having never played it before & being a pandorian I went a googlin' to see if there was an interpreter for linux or some non-wine way to run the game & came across this. Source code is available, but I'm not sure if there are x86-specific parts/opengl conflicts. It also requires some of the original game data & that could be x86 specific, but I dunno. Hopefully someone with a little bit more know-how can tell us if it's feasible ;]

Only had a quick look, but the git log says something about x86_64 fixes so at least it doesn't seem THAT portable to me. There is also a D3D renderer in the win95 directory.

Only got to play the demo on PC originally when I was little and it scared the living crap out of me :D
The game scared the crap out of me for a different reason.

I loaded it up one day, having left the disc in the CD drive the day before, only to hear this playing as the Aliens bombarded me, because someone else had left a music CD in there.

Obviously, I'd love to see it without that. :p

Since the AVP-engine is based on unrealengine, that is not opensource, it shouldn't work.
Unreal has a Linux-port but the core-engine sourcecode is not released. So, x86 only unfortunately.

I bet that spoilt the entire atmosphere of the game Prometheus

Oh, I'm sure all that extra irony only made it all the more horrifying.

Correct me if I'm mistaken, but doesn't this interpreter replace the game engine sort of like stargus?

Way to completely miss that we have the source code for this particular game because it was officially released. And again, way to completely overlook the link to a git repository WITH the source code modified and seemingly ported to OpenGL in the first post

But when you follow this link: http://icculus.org/avp/
It clearly states it is a Port, not a reinterpreter or something.

Way to prove you have absolutely no idea what you're talking about.
Most games are built up in such a way that the engine can be replaced. The engine interprets the resource files to put up a nice moving picture for you.

Well, ok, maybe your right. I heard somewhere, that the engine was a modification of the unreal engine. But I can't find anything about it. So, sorry if I was wrong.
There is clearly no source code for the unrealengine.
But AVP was released as opensource as far as some googeling turned up. So maybe it would be at least possible.

I would love to see this happen, as to weather or not it will happen, we have yet to see.

Looks like Pickle is already on it. We'll just have to wait.
