I did search a few things, but I didn't find any real answers to my question.

Why is the layout

CODE

_Y_
A_B
_X_

I've never seen this layout, the most popular layous I can think of are the SNES one

CODE

_X_
Y_B
_A_

and the SEGA (MS)

CODE

_Y_
X_B
_A_

Is there any significance to the current layout?

Not that I know of, I am sure that people will post some links for you.

I think Nintendo might be able to sue if you use a similar layout and can emulate SNES or NES games.

I thought the GP2X has the same layout?

I don't really look at the keys (and if I do I convert it to the Playstation standard in my head, Triangle, Square, Circle, X).

I would personally not care if each and every key was a picture of a different teletubby.

Short answer: Why not?

Long answer: I doubt that the layout is going to make much of a difference. I mean, how often do you really look at the buttons under your thumb when gaming? Since everyone who is puzzled by the action button layout already seems to know the snes and sega buttons well, I don't think it matters. Also, it may be possible to open the case and change the buttons around. It might even be possible to search the board and see that there have been quite a few topics/posts/complaints about this very thing already and the answer was basically "because".

I searched for "Buttons" and looked though countless posts about everything. :p

I also searched X Y B A to find IPB hates me.

I also tried ABXY to find one post of a guy who had the same complaint.

This type of thing isn't a deal breaker, it's just nice to stick with standards so you (I) don't have to get used to switching layouts every few hours.

The Pandora is unique, even down to it's action buttons :)

However, if you prefer SNES or SEGA layout, you can just swap them around.

Yes, but this doesn't mean the software will recognize the changes. Unless there will be a way to modify button flags. Will there be!?

I've got a feeling the emulators would have the buttons mapped to the traditional layout of the control pads of each system as standard in most cases. I think it would only be the letters on the buttons that would be different.

I hope that emulators on the Pandora will allow for customising control layouts as well though. Being able to play something like Smash T.V. for example with the analog sticks would be great

I'm sure you have at least ran into that answer on your search.

you can software map a button if you want to. You should also be able to save the mapping profile and quickly be able to switch between profiles.

So within the OS the button layout will be configurable. Or are you just telling me that the emulators will allow you to remap controls?

Um you can't force a game that uses digital controls to suddenly recognize analogue signals (unfortunately!) I suppose a clever developer could invent pseudo-analogue control in that by pushing the controller slightly (for example) to the left it emulates you tapping the left direction at, say, the rate of 1 tap per second, gradually increasing in speed as you push the controller further towards that direction until you hit the extreme left which results in the standard way of emulating the left direction being held down.

Not sure how that would work in practice though. Any thoughts from devs?

Let me rephrase, will those saved profiles be used with every game/application/emulator?

I think he means just using it like an old arcade-style digital joystick - not true analogue input. It would work great for those style of games.

It's not just what you search for, it's how you search. Searching just thread titles for "button" gives you half a dozen threads on this exact subject: 1 2 3 4 5 6

Does the lay-out of the buttons really matter?
Heck! If you really want the buttons in a certain lay-out that bad you can swap the buttons (or put sticker on them for that matter) and reprogram the lay-out...

If we're going to use mnemonic rules, and A is going to be Accept and B is gonna be Back, then my preferred layouts are the following ones:

CODE
Y
B A
X

Y
X A
B

So A = Accept / OK, B = Back, X = Cancel / EXit, and Y = Whatever. :)

Yeah, sorry, apparently I just couldn't think of the right keywords.

EDIT: I'm not quite sure if it would be better to continue off this thread or bump an old thread, but after reading a few of those other threads, has anybody thought of just color coating the buttons? Not labeling just coloring?

agreed. can we get a moderator to lock this?
I'd love to, but every time I lock a dead-end thread, somebody gets upset
