I was just taking a look at the site, noticed the very top line where it asks for any suggested names, and two things cause me to give you one: first, I haven't any notion how old that request is (if it's way past time to consider such things, then just pass this up, don 't bother trying to be insulting, because if I get nothing back on this, I'll automatically assume no one cares. The second reason to post this is because I am usually utterly helpless to come up with any names at all, so the fact that I came up with one is really by itself rather unusual, worth noting.

The suggestion is "persport". It's meant as a contraction of "personal portable", and also because it sounds much like "passport". If you like it, and want me to sign anything (like something legal), you figure it out, and if it doesn't immediately frighten me, I'll be glad to sign it. For the purposes of Pandora, you can use it any way that might help.

The name was disclosed in 2007, with an absolutely huge thread about the device in general:

I think the word Pandora comes from greek mythology and Pandora was the name of the first women ever. She was given a jar as a gift from Zeus which contained all the evils of mankind. Then she opened the jar out of curiousity and basicly unleached all the grievences of mankind.

The pandora is the first of its kind just like the first woman in greek mythology so I think this is a good name.

I sometimes wonder if the project might have run smoother, with "our" Pandora unleashing fewer evils upon us, if the product had simply been named something more benevolent. Or at least neutral.

Consider this - there WAS no "worldwide financial crisis" before Pandora... ;)

I hear the word Pandora, and immediately think 'streaming music'. However, I don't have any better ideas, so I've tried not to complain about it. Once it finally comes out and takes over the world, it won't matter. :)

Pandora was also chosen because it works in most Languages and we didn't want to just call it a bunch of letters and numbers.

We also liked the tongue in cheek claim that we will be unleashing evil on the world based from MS etc. claim that open source is bad. It's more just that it's bad for the big three (Sony, Nintendo, MS).

I was also thinking last week how download content (ala itunes) is nicely removing the publishing barrier which stopped so much good software appearing in shops in the 90s/00s. There are certain large condescending game shops / publishers which will soon vanish off the face of the earth as they are no longer needed. What a most terrible shame.

You think. Yeah... Not Wikipedia.

Wow, that's really a small comment... I mean 'small' as in, devoid of value and it belittles you for making it. You do truly add the ass to assumption.
