A Nerd's Dream

In the year 2016, scientists successfully created the first INM - Intelligent NanoMachine. Its task was to search out any metallic component and upgrade it for better functionality by ionizing the air nearby to create the needed materials. The prototypes were a little haywire, and usually ended up making things more more complex instead of less. Desperately in need of more funding to complete their prototypes, the scientists tried to update the nanomachines using the awesome power of the Internet. Their plan backfired - the nanomachines's code escaped through the Internet and implanted themselves like a computer virus into the system BIOS of the world's computers. The scientists tried to undo the damage they had caused, yet were balked by the nanomachines at every turn.

On April 16th of 2022, the nanomachines activated. Computers all around the world literally came alive as these microscopic machines spread like a disease around the homes of the average computer user. People tried to phone for help as their windows suddenly gained time-release safety bars, and cars anti-theft devices with a 2048-bit encryption key, yet the phones only transmitted binary. Everyone was literally trapped inside their own home.

The nations of the world gathered their resources to find the cause of this catastrophe. Their search led them through a trecherous maze of carefully placed traps by the nanomachines, originally designed as "home security". The decayed bodies of the two scientists were found inside the heart of this heavily guarded complex, victims of their own creation - they were trapped inside their own computer lab, unable to even operate the door.

Computer gurus, on the other hand, were having a blast. They found that the nanomachines could only use existing components in their "upgrades", and easily manipulated their innovations. Computer gurus quickly became amazingly wealthy as the demand easily outrose the supply by factors in the thousands. With obscene amounts of money, truly useful skills, and an apparent high intelligence, the gurus became lucky even in love.

One example of a guru coming to the rescue to a local neighbor was supermodel Anita Smith, who could not start her car due to the "upgrades" of the nanomachines. She called for the local guru, who came running with his box of various gizmos. Quickly establishing that the nanomachines added a 25-pin serial-port interface to the ignition sequence, he fashioned a quick wire-interface which flashed an ASCII sequence in binary of "たちあげる" (this was a Toyota Corolla). The two were married the next day.
