I was looking at the gp2x button layout and noticed that its symetrical and the volume buttons can be pressed both at the same time. Two players could both have a D-pad, two buttons and a shoulder button each,

P1 Would have the joy, vol-up, vol-dn and L shoulder button.

P2 would have the 4 stf buttons as a d-pad, select , start and R shoulder button.

hmm, just got to think of a 2Plr game that would suit a portrait aspect ratio :)

Of course, one player would have to use "d-pad" with his right thumb. Which would be awkward since all video gamers have been trained with their left thumb. Maybe it would be alright so I can play against my left-handed freak-of-nature friends.

Cheers!

Cookie And Cream for the PSX (PS2?) used this control scheme. 4 players on 2 controllers even. It featured a dynamic split/nonsplit (depending on if they are in the same place) screen showing two characters indepently progressing through a side-scrolling puzzle game, where each one had to solve puzzles to let the other advance.

The original Wario Ware had a few games that you could play with a friend on one console. The only thing is theirs only used the L and R buttons!

If I were you I would try to keep it to the pad/4 buttons and the L/R buttons. Making it nice and simple.
