Hey guys, sorry the beta server was down for a big chunk of today. I was hot on the trail of a bug that resulted in about 5% of all our traffic getting dropped.
Lesson of the day. Never ever take a TCP message and add the null char '\0' to the end to denote the end of a string transmission...
There are rumours (which are rumoured to be confirmed) that Pandora will support OpenGL proper.
It really is the way to go, but I'm going to need several days of getting to learn it and testing before I make the switch. Converting from SDL to OpenGL isn't going to be a mix and match, gradual...
I need a brave soul... Ideally someone with a sizeable (100ms+) ping to my server.
Can someone do the following for me:
1) ping games.randomlynx.net and tell me what your delay is
2) Download the following:
http://games.randomlynx.net/GalacticArtifa...factNetTest.exe
And place it into your...
There is one more thing I want to fix... Right now I've attempted to override a setting: TCP_NODELAY that would guarantee messages have been sent. Normally it's a tradeoff to ensure the messages aren't blocking other threads. No reason to do this now that the messages are being threaded.
And...
The coloured option text is an excellent interim solution for determining which icon type is which. The options are done rather primitively at the moment, but I might be able to squeeze this in.
TheMonkey is also finding bugs with win not working. I was able to inconsistently reproduce it by...

Should fix red area bug. Cursor and pan speeds now both tied to real time instead of fps. (Green Cursor might be too slow now)
OK, more on the red area.
I had a good think about this for a couple of hours and was about to put the whole thing off to Release D, but I think I have a solution.
Right now, everything is rendered in layers. From the bottom to the top:
Galaxy Surface
Radar Surface
Information Surface
These...
Well Monkey, I did the research and found out what the delay was.
First of all on my fast computer my information surface is rendered in a fifth the time yours is, in about 11ms. Still, I dug down and found out what that problem was.
It's not a layering problem, as the layer is produced once...
Whoops, never mind, I just never took the frame limiter off on my Windows machine.
After a bit of research, it looks like limiting to vsync is OpenGL specific, and doesn't work with SDL.
I still have plenty of time to transition to OpenGL though.
I'd shied away from fullscreen as it seemed to cause my X-Server to crash on linux. I just gave it a try on my Windows machine.
SWEET ZOMBIE ODIN is that fast now... :)
although the screen Hz isn't the limiter.. I'm getting 250fps.. 90fps min on the worst CPU crunching cycles.. more research...
Yes, that will be perfect. I assume there's no such equivalent on desktop Linux PCs?
EDIT: ooooo, wait a sec... I'm seeing stuff here about vsync not working in Windowed mode. Let me research some more, I'll post back here if I figure it out...
I just got off the phone with my local credit union here in Vancouver, Canada: Vancity. International wire transfers are $20CAD.
As one of the very few non-evil banks on the planet, I'll gladly pay an extra $5 for complete piece of mind. I hope Tranzfers doesn't add my phone number to some...
I've been doing a fair amount of work trying to get consistent frame rates for my game. However after doing a bit of research, it appears that Linux kernels (the 32 bit ones anyways) have a coded 10ms delay in the evaluation of timer events. That is, you can't sleep in intervals of less than...
I just registered with Tranzfers.com about an hour ago... they called me back within an hour asking to help me through the rest of the registration process.
Along with the secure emailing of photo id and proof of address... apparently they also need to send you some sort of mail letter with a...
Just to get back to this..
I know it's unwise to optimize against Windows or Linux if I'm planning on releasing for Pandora, but I'm also planning to release for Windows and Linux... I've got to start some level of optimization now or otherwise I'll be waiting until June to get this thing...
I have to sort out these GPL issues before I release another static binary. You willing to risk a dynamic one and have to hunt around or compile your own libs?
It almost certainly wont work on 64 bit linux either... not doing a good job of late of making Linux users happy... :|
