Intel abandons future Atom line of processors


You could adjust the categories to those nutritional values and automation might actually give you insight into whether or not you are on a healthy diet or having shortages.
Interesting idea, this way one could keep track of the balance between protein, carb and fat as well as the glycemic index and other values of the food supply.
Might come in especcially handy for people with diabetes, adrenalism or similar dietary challenges.

This way, you put in a milk, and the fridge reads the new ID, connects to the internet to see what it is, and automatically actions a "new milk in fridge". If ID's get long enough, it can even have extra information, like optimal preservation temperature, and (believe it or not) when it will expire at the current temperature it has been in.
This is especially handy for the frozen part of the fridge... do YOU remember whats there? Mine is full, and I get surprised each time when I find edible things.

Now, with that milk imagine that you bought ANOTHER brand than your usual... and imagine your brand paying the fridge company to send you an mpeg6 commercial, especially tailored for you to return to their brand... giving you a discount, or another freebie...
 
I was at a gas station last weekend that had just swapped out it's pumps to new models. They had a TV screen in them with loudspeakers doing a constant barage of seemingly targeted commercials - likely triggered off of previous credit card purchases - and the pump was slower taking twice as long to purchase the fuel. Where I purchase gasoline 40+ gallons at a time, it was nonstop truck adds. I'm sure the station owners are getting something kicked back for that. No way to stop it or lower the volume. I'll likely avoid that station in the future. But - another example of a general purpose embedded system.

Grrr, I've literally been fighting this fight for 15 years. "Oh, 96 bytes? We can store the product code plus a bunch of static information! We can put the price on them so they're easy to ring up!" NO! It's an ID. Store an ID. Use that ID to look up the information. Store absolutely no identifiable information on the chip itself. By making a consistent standard of how IDs work and how to look them up you make everything easy. Minimal product databases can be shared, copied, extensive databases queried. With the right identification you can know the exact minute that milk was made and what machine it came from, so if there's a recall related to a very specific machine it's a trivial lookup to tell exactly which product was effected and where they went. You could store some of this information on the tag itself but the tag is small and finite where the information stored behind an ID lookup is practically limitless.
It's a battle I've been losing. Instead we've got "clever" people writing actual information to the tag, ignoring the usefulness of the ID itself, and that's how you end up with passports that anyone with a pocket reader can just scan and discover a disturbing amount of information about you. We had encrypted RFID tags in 2002! I played with them! There's no need for the insecurity that we currently have! It's insane!
 
the screen on the fridge can let you "see "what you have before opening the door.. browse the contents. it can suggest recipes according to the contents etc.... you know its going to happen . there is already talk of RFID tags on food in supermarkets so you just push your trolley to the checkout it reads all the ID's without taking them from the trolley and presents you with a bill. next step is to use NFC to read your transaction card and automatically debit from your prefered account. no need to take your wallet out of your pocket. not advocating this by any means. but i have seen articles on the seperate parts of this scenario someday someone will link them all.pick and pay taken to the extreme....

Indeed. It's the difference that makes it fully automatic and will greatly enhance the usability of smart-fridges.

I do. I have several drawers, each with its own dedicated category of food items, sorted by purchase date.
 
Smart fridges aren't for you to keep track of what is in your fridge.

A smart fridge is someone else's apparatus for figuring out how and when you eat.
Totally true. There's tons of money to be made out of tracking more and more aspects of people's lives.

I don't even see any Intel spec listings for the SoC on these yet. Interesting that they note that these will, "run Yocto Linux-based software designed for IoT".

The dev boards aren't cheap - but dev boards never are. It will be interesting to see where Intel prices this new SoC line. If it is truly for the IoT market, it's going to have to be pretty low priced in quantities.

i'd like to know how many joules it needs for a second of run time. i also wish you could run these things on 5V, since then at least it makes it seem like they're trying to let you run it off an old cell-phone charger. (bad rpi 3, bad dog!)
 
Those Joule SoCs look interesting. I am looking forward to seeing some more numbers and measurements.

Unfortunately Intels problem with the Atom line was that they were cheep so they weren't getting there normal massive income numbers when they were used in low end netbooks or things like the compute stick. They were priced to match ARM chips to get cell phone makers onboard and that didn't happen. I don't see them pricing the new line less than there core m line or they will have the same complaint when they end up in low end systems.
