I am a little confused , have u just tested the gp32's to 166mz or have u actually modded the motherboard to always use 166mhz??????????

If so doesent this eat batteries like hell?? :( :( :(

No it is still software selectable, just means the GP32 won't crash at 166mhz like some do.

You can mod your own, see robs guide www.cobbleware.com

Apparently gamepark use different memory suppliers at different times. Some memory lets gp32s run at 166mhz, other memory doesn't let them run quite so fast. All gp32s officially have a top speed of 133mhz. GBAx are now shipping GP32s with the free launcher etc already installed, so I guess that as part of that process, they're testing which ones can run at 166mhz without problems, and selling those ones as 'guaranteed 166mhz'. Yes, they'll eat the batteries quicker if used at 166mhz, but the speed setting is an option in certain programs, so they'll be jsut the same as another gp32 unless you choose to run them faster.

Ok thanks for that , i was kinda annoyed cuz i bought my gp32 b 4 xmas , mine still goes to 166mhz thank god :D , Happy happy snes

Does this mean that if you buy a standard GP32 from GBAx, that it has no chance of running at 166Mhz?

all the ram used in gp32 will allow the gp32 to run at 166mhz. The mod at www.cobbleware.com increases the voltage allowed into the cpu by changing a resistor. The voltage allowed into the cpu is the limiting factor in some gp32s, not the ram

no, i think they do the voltage mod on ones ordered to go at 166mhz.

I think it would be more likely that they just test them to see if they work at 166Mhz

quote from Robster: -

scottm: Check GBax.com, they're modifying the GP32 if it doesn't run at 166MHz. The guide to doing that is on my site. I think 20 quid is pretty reasonable for that.

Also check this thread:- thread

I think it is still random with the same probability of 166mhz success if you buy a non-guaranteed 166 mhz GP32 from GBAX.

The chance is exactly the same, in fact i'd say about 60% - 65% goto 166mhz anyway.

I'm not personally doing the voltage mod i've got someone who does GBA afterburner installs to do it, he says its 'a piece of piss' to do (easier than fitting an afterburner) so i'd recommend some of you 133mhz guys take a look. Of 10 GP32's I gave him he said 6 already ran at 166mhz anyway so i'd say 60%.

Getting the first new GP32's made by gamepark in over a year next week - will report on their overclocking powers then (fingers crossed they all might as i'd say over the last year the quality of parts might have exceeded the gp32's needs)
